DFW Journallers - shall we meet?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Treacle : One Thread

Okay, here we go. Here's a non-completely-public forum to talk about the possibilities of a mini "convention" (to use the term from diary-l) for DFW journallers. Suggestions? Remarks? Have at it.

Answers

Well, there's been the suggestion of meeting up at Pocket Sandwich Theatre to see Monk's Night Out while they're up here in Dallas. That would make the times either this weekend or next. I'd push for next if we're going to do that. Any other suggestions?

-- Erin (erin@treacle.net), June 15, 1999.

You know, I honestly have no idea how people will recognize me! I could go a la Meg Ryan in "You've Got Mail" with a flower in the book, I could wear the wings (check here if you're wondering what we're talking about) ... I don't even know what I'll be wearing because I was at my parents' last night and I'm wearing my mother's clothes. So let's see ... look for a short (5'3") girl with shoulder-length reddish-brown hair, probably drinking a Guinness. Oh, and I'm the only person I know who wears a silver bell on a necklace ... if you can see something that small.

Looking forward to it!

-- Erin (erin@treacle.net), June 25, 1999.

I'm all for it. The weekend of June 26-27 works best, though it's a little short notice. Anyplace is fine, though I'll have to drive from home in Fort Worth or work in Irving.

-- Andy (agrieser@aol.com), June 15, 1999.

I'm up for it! I'll drive anywhere in Texas, just because I love the good 'ol road trip.. but I live in Irving (one mile from the nearest runway at D/FW airport). :)

-- kaRa leah (tinky@jestercourt.com), June 15, 1999.

I'm excited. Is anyone familiar with that area? Should we meet somewhere first, like an IHOP and talk talk talk? I'm good for either night, either weekend. Has anyone written to Pamie to see if she is going to be here or is that a given when Monk's Night Out is out and about?

-- Carole (carole@airmail.net), June 15, 1999.

Shmuel sent me a copy of a message on Pamie's discussion boards. She's not actually in this show that's touring up here in Dallas, but it is that very same troupe. It still sounds like it might be a fun thing to do.

-- Erin (another address) (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 16, 1999.

I'm game, whatever the majority wants to do. I don't know if most people here are night owls or not, but if I'm thinking of the right Pocket Sandwich Theatre (on Mockingbird, just off Central, right?), Greenville Avenue's just around the bend, there's ample places we can go hang in before or after. Or both.

I think it's a rockin' idea, though, whatever we do.

-- never (never@mostly.com), June 16, 1999.

Yeah, it's right off of Mockingbird and Central (here's a map) and Greenville is right around the corner. There are many fun little bars including ... TA DA! The London Tavern! (Is that the one we discussed before or was it the Londoner in Addison?) Anyway, there are loads of fun little pubs, restaurants, etc., and lower Greenville is notorious for weekend fun. That does mean that parking can be a pain, though. It would also be cheaper to go somewhere like IHOP or Denny's. Thoughts? I can scout out the area if we need to. That area is very close to SMU as well as being practically downtown, so there's quite a bit around in the way of restaurants, coffee places, etc.

Oh, and feel free to spread the word to other journallers who might not be on the lists ... it'd be fun to make this into an informal sort of gathering of Texas people.

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 16, 1999.

Oh, and here's something else ... some people are anonymous or pseudonymous journallers. There's been a mention of digital cameras, and of course we'll be seeing each other face-to-face. I just want to make sure everyone realizes that and settles on names/swears to be nice and keep names private/whatever needs to happen to make it comfortable for people. *grin*

-- Erin (again) (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 16, 1999.

Wow, Erin, that's a good idea. A pub or IHOP or something cheap like that would probably be the best bet for me....I'm poor! There's an IHOP on the corner of Mockingbird and Abrams that I've been to many many times that is pretty cool. What time exactly are you thinking of doing this? The afternoon or later at night? Either way is fine by me. Just let me know what goes down, k?

-- Melissa (mxpxgrrl@alloymail.com), June 16, 1999.

How weird. I just started my journal (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Atrium/2958)2 weeks ago! But, I have been reading Pamie for a while. Is that what we all have in common? I would love to see the Monks show - wish she was going to be in it - but could not make it until next weekend.

-- Allison Lowe (lowea@phscare.org), June 16, 1999.

So... have we made any firm decisions?

/anxious

-- never (never@mostly.com), June 17, 1999.

Is there anyone who definitely canNOT make it on either the 25th or the 26th? Does anyone have some serious time constraints on those evenings/nights? *smile* Carole

-- Carole (carole@airmail.net), June 18, 1999.

I'm good for either night. I think the draw for the 26th was the performance (albeit Pamie-less) of Monks' Nite Out. But then, it'd be much easier for me to pop over after work than to drive out from Cowtown on Saturday.

-- Andy (agrieser@aol.com), June 18, 1999.

What we need to do is get a check on how many people will actually be coming. If you don't want to do a roll-call type thing here, please at least e-mail me (at whichever address ... it all ends up in the BlackHole called my Inbox) and tell me you're coming. If you're going to bring someone with you that's peachy ... we just need a headcount.

I'm really leaning toward the idea of meeting up beforehand and then heading over to Pocket Sandwich. That show begins after 11pm so it's plenty of time for people to get anywhere. I might personally lean toward a Friday night show because I'm (believe it or not) a Sunday School teacher and have to get to church by 8:45 on Sunday mornings. I'd love to promote the London Tavern since it's my favorite local pub and they have yummy Scotch eggs and Bass on tap [drool] but we'd need to check ages ... minors aren't permitted on "party nights."

If we agree to go to the show, we'll need to call for reservations. This place is popular so we'll probably need to move on it. We should probably try for group reservations just so we can get everyone at once ... but then we'd need a pretty firm committment that you're coming.

Um ... anything else? This is so much fun to think about ... I'm excited about the distant possibility of a huge JournalCon, but I'm more excited about this right now.

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 18, 1999.

Good Lord... 11 p.m. is SO FAR past my bedtime. No, really.

Anyway, I will probably bring a single male friend so he can clumsily hit on all the women. We are both well above legal drinking age (sigh -- my birthday is in a month), so no problem there.

Let's definitely decide on a before-the-show pub in advance; as you said somewhere, Erin, downtown Dallas is a maze, and my FW brain isn't totally hip to it yet. We should also keep parking in mind, since I imagine few of us will carpool.

-- Andy (agrieser@aol.com), June 18, 1999.

I will be there with Daniel. If the age rule is really, really STRICT, Daniel and I might need to meet up with you later. He is a couple of months shy of 18 -- but isn't it legally ok if he is with his mother? Should I call and ask? I'm setting aside Friday night for this shindig (but can still manage a Saturday if need be). *smile* Carole

-- Carole (carole@airmail.net), June 18, 1999.

I will most likely be there, and may bring a male friend (although he doesn't know it yet). We are both well into our 30's.

Looking forward to it!

-- Tamara (tamthor@beckett.com), June 18, 1999.

Well, to be honest, I've only had my id checked once when I was there. My first appearance at that pub was with angel wings, false eyelashes, a really short skirt, and really tall heels though, so they might have been biased that first time and then just remembered. ;-) If you want to call and check about going with Daniel, it's the London Tavern on Greenville.

Carpooling is an excellent idea because while they do have valet parking there, it's not free and driving on lower Greenville can be a pain. Of course, then we get to pick a carpooling point ... *grin*

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 18, 1999.

If we do this on Friday, I can pick up whomever else works in Las Colinas. I drive an Explorer, so there's room for four or five. My friend works in Garland, and so probably won't be carpooling with me, if he does go at all.

If you're interested, e-mail me at the address above.

-- Andy (agrieser@aol.com), June 18, 1999.

I work in the Richardson area and if I clean out the back of my car I can get three to four more people in. You can just e-mail me about that, too.

Quickie question ... I know that some of the other regional Journal gatherings are actually doing things like reading entries and stuff like that. I was just thinking of a bunch of people getting together, schmoozing, and having fun babbling away with each other. Is that an okay plan? I'm not much for formal gatherings.

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 18, 1999.

I'd far prefer just meeting you people to sitting around reading what we've all already probably read...

-- Andy (agrieser@aol.com), June 18, 1999.

(Raising hand) - I'll be there.

I work in Las Colinas but live in Richardson, so I'll probably be driving as well.

I don't know about carpooling to the bar...they've gotten pretty ugly in the vicinity of Greenville. The Kroger parking lot at Mockingbird and Greenville is a possibility, but I can't speak for whether they're touchy about that sort of thing.

I, too, would much rather sit around and talk. I was never much for performance art, myself.

Next detail: time?

-- never (never@mostly.com), June 18, 1999.

I can definitely make it on the 25th as far as I know. I was going to go to a show, but I think meeting the other area journallers would be much more interesting than seeing Doosu for the umpteenth time. I live in Ft. Worth at the moment, though, so if anyone else lives around the FW/Midcities area and wants to carpool, I'm all about that!

What time do you guys want to meet at the pub? I'm legal, so there's no problem there for me. Do you know how much the Monks thing is? I'm low on funds, so if it's really expensive, I'd rather just sit and talk with the other journallers somewhere.

I wouldn't think that Kroger would have a problem with us using their parking lot - but then again, I could be wrong. It would probably be a lot easier than trying to find parking places on Greenville - especially on a Friday night.

-- Melissa (mxpxgrrl@alloymail.com), June 18, 1999.

I took a look around while I was down that way for lunch. There's a Dart Park And Ride lot right across the street from the Pocket Sandwich Theatre, and it looks like the free lot that's farthest away from the station. I would recommend that as a meeting point for carpooling to the bar.

It's the Park and Ride at Mockingbird Station, btw. Should be able to find maps at DART's website.

-- never (never@mostly.com), June 19, 1999.

I would love to get together but I'm flying back from Cleveland on the 25th. My Flight gets in at DFW at 9PM, so with luggage and driving and crap I could show up at 10 or so if anyone is a late-night owl.

Bill (The Daily Epiphany)

-- Bill Chance (chancew1@aol.com), June 20, 1999.

Hi, Bill! It looks like the 25th will be a night-owl meeting, so come on by! The show at Pocket Sandwich Theatre begins at 11 and costs $8 (more information at their web site), and it looks like meeting at the London Tavern would be do-able. It's on lower Greenville, past McCommas. Darn it ... I need to look at Never's message about DART again, but I remember that it sounded like a good option. It could also be helpful for people coming in from other parts of Dallas ... I wish they'd get the Light Rail extended! Glad that it's coming together!

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 20, 1999.

So, what time are we meeting in the parking lot? We are going to meet in the parking lot and then going to the pub, right? Or is the pub thing a come and go whenever you wish sort of thing? *ack* So many details!

-- Melissa (mxpxgrrl@alloymail.com), June 21, 1999.

I had no idea there were so many DFW journals! With the exception of The Daily Epiphany, I don't think I've read you guys. Could you all post addresses? I've just started (again) and can be found at:

http://www.angelfire.com/tx/JennI

I'd love to join you this weekend and I'm totally open to where and when. -Jenn

-- Jenn Turner (turnersworld@yahoo.com), June 21, 1999.

For anyone who may be unfamiliar with the area, here's a map: downtown map

or cut and paste: http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&addr=Central+expressway+and+Mockingbird&csz=dallas%2C+tx&Get+Map=Get+Map

(Or go to the mapper of your choice and look up 'Central Expressway and Mockingbird) Zoom in a couple of levels, the actual cross street is Mockingbird Station (creative, eh?). I'll be happy to give written directions to anyone who needs 'em.

That said, I would recommend that those of you who do not wish to valet park (or valet park alone) get together and plan a meeting time.

I am notoriously unreliable, chronically very early or just a little late, so I'm going to just head straight to the bar.

I, myself, am a night owl generally, and there are ample places in the area to head for coffee and late night snacks afterwards for anyone who wants to do that - there's a JoJo's down the street, 3 Cafe Brazils within a short driving distance, and a wonderful plain-old-24-hour-diner (Lakewood Cafe) nearby.

Can you tell I desperately miss living down in that part of town?

Anyway, the only other thing I can think of is that if there's any kind trusting soul who's going to be there early in the evening who is willing to give out their cellphone number to anyone who thinks they might get lost. No need to post it here, just someone willing to email it to anyone who feels insecure about finding the place/us.

Oh, and yes, please everyone post their URL. I don't know all of you, and I would like to.

Hey y'all. I was out of town this weekend but glad to come back and find that the discussion to meet is still going on. However, I scanned the above and couldn't determine if a decision had been made! Is it Friday or Saturday?

How will we all recognize each other? I will be excited to meet all of you!

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Atrium/2958

-- Allison Lowe (lowea@phscare.org), June 21, 1999.

Hi Jenni! Good to see you on here.

Time suggestions for showing up down at the London Tavern? Should we say around 7 or 8 just to allow a bit of time for people after work? Later? Earlier?

We can also decide to skip the PST show if we'd like, but we should decide today or tomorrow if some or all of us want to attempt going to that. We'll need to call ahead and see about tickets.

Glad to see that it's coming together! I can also give my cell phone number to people who might need it on Friday ... I'll pretend I trust people for once. ;-)

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 21, 1999.

Here are the particulars:

Date: Friday, 25 June
Place: London Tavern, 2001 Greenville. Map.
Time: ???
Know Erin's face: http://www.treac le.net/images/photos/girls.jpg ... I'm the one standing up. Kind of.

http://www.treacle.net/treacle/

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 21, 1999.

I'd say 7 p.m. Friday, especially since traffic in that area tends to be a bit heavy. Or maybe, Erin, you can get there a little early and wait for the rest of us to recognize you.

That said, where's this place we're supposed to meet for carpoolage?

-- Andy (agrieser@aol.com), June 21, 1999.

I think we're supposed to be carpooling from the DART station parking lot, right? If anyone wants to carpool from there to the pub, maybe we can all meet there a bit before 7 so we can find each other and such.

Here's my URL --> http://eurydice.net/cyberpunk/index.html

The journal is password protected - just e-mail me and I'll give you the password. =0)

Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday!

Melissa

-- Melissa (mxpxgrrl@alloymail.com), June 21, 1999.

You're right -- I was suffering Stars Exhaustion Syndrome or something. Anyway, I no longer think I can make it to see the Monks. If anyone else is just going to the pub, e-mail me and we can work out a carpool plan.

-- Andy (agrieser@aol.com), June 21, 1999.

I'm not going to the Monks either - lack of $$$ and all. So I can carpool with you, Andy.

Erin - what are some landmarks around the pub so I know where to look for it? The only places I know on Greenville are the Granada, the Arcadia, and Red Jacket.

-- Melissa (mxpxgrrl@alloymail.com), June 21, 1999.

I'm thinking it might be more fun to just sit around and chat all night instead of trying to go off to another performance. And like Nev said, there are so many other places around lower Greenville that would be good to go. What do all of you think?

Here are some basic directions to London Tavern: from US75 exit Mockingbird. Go east on Mockingbird until Greenville; take a right on Greenville. If not already crowded and with slow-moving traffic, it will be later. It's past the Granada, past the Canine Commissary, past Priscilla's. In fact, it's past McCommas. The pub is on the east (left) side of the road, so if you'd like to valet park ($3 last time I checked) you'll probably want to take a left on one of the surrounding residential streets to get to Matilda, take Matilda to another street that will be south of the pub, and then make a right back onto Greenville so you can just drive straight up to the pub. Vickery is really close to it ... sorry I'm not more specific, I don't usually pay attention to that. You'll also probably be able to find parking in lots or streets in that area.

The pub itself has a front porch with tables and chairs, is faux Tudor style, and has a sign with a caricature of Queen Elizabeth II. It's actually on a corner of Greenville and one of those little cross streets. If you see the Dubliner, you've gone just a wee bit too far so walk a bit north and you'll be there.

I will definitely try to get there early so I'll be the point of contact.

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 21, 1999.

I think maybe we should forego the PST this time, I don't think we're going to have any problems with long uncomfortable silences :)

I'm planning on being there around 7ish. We'll have to think of something unique to put on the table so everyone will know what to look for.

Or, Erin could dress up again...

-- never (never@mostly.com), June 21, 1999.

*grin* Well, the angel wings actually are unpacked from the move ... oh dear. I would say I'd wear a Stars t-shirt, but the city seems to be overrun with them these days. Um ... I'll figure something out and let you know, whether it be a big sign saying "I'M ERIN!!" or wrapping my cat Clive around my neck. ;-)

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 22, 1999.

The pub sounds good. I'll try to make it, though I'll be late. If my plane comes in on time I should show up a little after ten. I won't be able to stay long, but it would be nice to say hello.

I'll be the old, fat, exhausted guy with wrinkled clothing that looks like he came right off of an airplane ride.

Bill

-- Bill Chance (chancew1@aol.com), June 22, 1999.

Argh. I just realized that, with Wife going out of town, I'll need to zip back to Cowtown after work to feed the pets. So I guess I'll just brave the pub's valet service (you did say they have one, right, Erin?) and get there when I can (still around 7ish, I imagine).

-- Andy (agrieser@aol.com), June 23, 1999.

They do have valet parking - $3 for the night. Really the only bad thing about it is getting in line for it since it's on the left side of the street. We should be there for a while, Bill, so it'll be great to see you. I'm sure you'll just have to look around for a group of people all talking over each other and wondering how to talk about others with using HTML tags. *grin*

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 23, 1999.

So, am I counting eight women, Andy, and one old exhausted guy? Sound like a lot of fun! Is Pocket Sandwich still in the picture? - Jenn

Oh, wow. I had no idea you guys were planning on seeing Monks' Night Out this weekend. That's so cool.

I'm sorry I won't be there.

But, for those of you who do follow my journal, Andy and Jon will be in this show (Andy posts in the forum, Jon made that flash splash page during Birthday Week).

I haven't seen this show all the way through, and the cast includes some "special guest Monks" who are not normally members of the troupe but are working on this show since we had so many shows this summer.

Here's what I can tell you about this show: it is for grown-ups, since our language tends to be on the blue side. There is a mix of sketch and improv, and some of the sketches I did when we had the show in Houston last weekend.

If you see them, tell 'em I said hi.

-- pamie (pamie@pamie.com), June 24, 1999.

I think it might still be fun to go on to the troupe show so we'd need to check on ticket availability and who might continue on to that. That might also be a place for others who might not meet the bar age to meet up with others. Should we get a count on how many are interested? Tickets are $8, show begins late, visit the PST page (linked somewhere above) for more details.

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 24, 1999.

I don't think I'll be able to make the show. Simply too late for that night. I'd prefer to meet up at the tavern this time, but if other folks want to head over to the show, cool.

-- Bill Chance (chancew1@aol.com), June 24, 1999.

Yeah, I think I'll bow out of the show, too. So Erin, will you be wearing a bright red carnation or the angel getup or something at the pub? I should get there a bit after 7.

-- Andy (agrieser@aol.com), June 25, 1999.

Fate would not let this opportunity pass without at least a small potential that I would be able to be a part of it. This is the morning of the tavern get-together, and just a few minutes ago I discovered that these plans even existed. No time to read up on you all, though I have seen Erin's page quite a few times so at least I'll know some stuff about her. I've met Never, and Bill, and Melody, and Zach, and it'll be divine to get to know the rest of the locals who share their lives online. Thanks Erin. I hope I get to come.

-- Tricia Walraven (trish@intellivations.com), June 25, 1999.

(Damn it all, I posted it with an address that's always at the top ... trying again)

-- Erin (emvenema@yahoo.com), June 25, 1999.

Oh my god I was so drunk I'm sorry I puked on you, Bill! We all got so wasted it wasn't even funny! Wasn't it KEWL though?

For a less embellished version, though, I mentioned a bit in my journal that I finally updated tonight(now you don't have to die, Melody.) I was happy everyone that made it could be there.

love, Trish

Tricia, you're hilarious. The meeting was *lots* of fun ... so much so that I've set up a new forum for discussing the next meeting.
