Bennett Estimates Half of Nation's Hospitals Not Y2K Compliant

BY NORMA WAGNER, THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

    Half of the nation's 6,000 hospitals will not be Y2K compliant when the new year rolls in, particularly those in rural areas, estimates U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett.

Randy J. Fisher, the Utah health department's director of information technology, has asked for confirmation from the state's 42 hospital administrators that their facilities are Y2K compliant, "but none have responded back to us.

    "So to say we're nervous about the future would be a bit of an understatement."

==============

Think of the economic impact alone of hospitals struggling to stay economically afloat, yet alone the problems associated with people unable to receive adequate health care.

And then there is their vendors and suppliers, government funded medical payment programs, embedded systems, electricity, water,
sewerage etc etc ad infinitum.

Put it all together and the health care system is a mess.

Then add in the additional strains to an already overburdened system of rioting, no show employees, reduced cash flow and you have a recipe for disaster.
