Power producers now testing, making contingency plans

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I received this from a y2k aware co-worker whose sister works at a nearby power generation company (hydroelectric).

Better news this time. My sister said that [her company] has now run 2 successful tests in which they ran the clocks forward on a closed portion of the system without incident. But they still recognize that (1) they won't know for sure until they run the real "test" and (2) other systems can still pull them off line.

It is interesting to note that my sister is required (by late July) to demonstrate that she can produce payroll at 60% pay without taxes for at least two weeks in the event that the computers all go down and pay a lesser rate in cash if the banks close.

Now this is interesting. Paying in cash is the LAST thing the banks want to hear. I imagine there will be some effort to deny this but I suspect many companies will have this type of contingency plan. They know they must have their workers to fix the problems.

Got cash?
