What are "Cape" & Lynx Point Coon Cats

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

Where may I view pictures of "Cape" Coons and "Lynx Point" Coons. Are they different than the recognized varieties/colors? I am getting ready to select a kitten and have done considerable research as well as being "aunt" to the most intellectual feline on earth, Tigger the Mackeral Tabby. I was about to select a cattery and then read an ad in the local paper for Cape & Lynx Point coons. Being skeptical by nature, I decided to check here first. Can anyone help?

I've been breeding Maine Coons Cats for ten years, and I'm not sorry to say that I've never heard of a "Cape" coon (unless you mean Cheryl Kearn's Capecoon Cattery on Cape Cod...) As for a lynx point Maine Coon, the only way to get the pointed color is to hybridize with Siamese or another breed that carries points... so the color is considered evidence of impurity, and not permitted in the show ring.

This is not to say that the color hasn't cropped up in registered Maine Coons; it has, but reputable breeders spay and neuter these kittens.

My guess is that this ad was placed by a backyard breeder, and I would stay far, far away.

We went to visit our Silver Shadow (a shaded silver Maine coon kitten)today at the breeders. We lost our cream tabby Maine Coon to kidney failure over the Memorial Day weekend and knew we had to have another Maine Coon. The breeder we found also had a litter of Lynx point Maine Coons.

They were marked beautifully. The only real difference I cound see was the darker markings around the eyes and the large fur tipped ears. Large ears with the fur tipping past the tops of the ear (one looked like at least 1/4 inch or more past the end of the ear tip and they were only 8 weeks old). The father had ear tips that had to be at least 1/2 inch. or more. Gives them a sort of elf like appearance; very cute.

We decided to go with our first choice, the shadded silver. He was frisky and came to us and I think he'll enjoy living with use as much as we'll enjoy having him. I'm hoping he'll have some of the same traits as Sundance as well as enough of his own to make him special.

If you get a Maine Coon, you can't go wrong. They are wonderful pets and I miss our boy so much. I think I would have taken one of the Lynx points if it wasn't for the fact that I'd have to wait another 8 weeks to bring him home.

Best of luck to you and your kittie, whatever type you choose.

Linda
