OT but important, please read

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

A while ago, I sent a copy of my novel "U-129" to a few people. My HD has since crashed and my backup files became corrupted. I no longer have an intact copy of that novel beyond the first few chapters.

Normally this would be just a major nuisance. However, I'm engaging in correspondence with some nice people at HarperCollins right now. The loss of U-129 could become more than a major nuisance to me.

If *anyone* has it -Hallyx, I think I sent you a copy- please email me ASAP.

If you're not sure whether you have it, do a search for documents containing "Glebe" or "Marvin Chalmers". I would be extremely grateful for any assistance here.

Thanks a lot and sorry for the OT posting,

Leo

Major bummer, dude. Suggestion: post another topic titled "Does anyone have U-129?" or something like that. A lot of people skip over these "Important read this" threads.

Leo, what all are you up to these days? You've been MIA. Are you still developing that bug-out property? What about the abandoned tower, your girlfriend, the banker-lady investor, your neighborhood, etc?? Were you in that freak hail storm? Do you still want to go to school in America? Update us!

Leo,

Send Hallyx a direct e-mail.

Remember, back-up disks... back-up plans.

Got hard copy?

Good luck!

Backup disks failed. Secondary backup disks (y2k has taught me caution) had a virus in them. Tertiary backup disks, I wasn't smart enough to have. Next time I will. And quaternary, for that matter.

Hailstorm: I live on the lower north shore of Sydney, opposite the CBD. The storm caused the brunt of its damage out west, in the southern and western suburbs. The hailstorms out there were like grapefruits. The ones here were only lemon-sized.

Ironic fact: As the hail came down I was writing a major combat scene in which the main characters were using artillery. I thought the loud bangs on my skylight were just my overactive imagination or something, until I saw a plant outside my window being smashed down!

Abandoned building: I may store something there, just to be on the safe side. The chances of anyone finding it would be minimal or nonexistent.

Business: I'm working on a few other things right now. Since I've decided that any panic is only going to begin in November or December, I'm not too worried about hurrying with the business. I plan to run some free information evenings at my old high-school (I was a reasonably successful student, and they owe me a few favors), and market my services that way.

College: Yep, planning to go Harvard `04. Did the SATs again (1520! ;) ), and the other things I'm doing should help my admission chances. The reason I'm not going `03 is because I have NO desire to be in the United States if y2k is ugly; Australia would be a far safer place to live, from the "catastrophic meltdown" point of view.
