Tsunami Approaches American Shore

vanity June 3, 1999 Dog Gone

The media and the President's Year 2000 Council usually portray Y2K as a discreet event that will be first felt at midnight on December 31. That depiction is wrong.

Think of it more in terms of a Tsunami, and you may have a better appreciation for what we can expect.

A Tsunami is a tidal wave created by a major earthquake far out in the deep ocean. The earthquake occurred January 1, 1999. Like ships located at the epicenter, not much was noticed.

A few taxis in Sweden and Singapore couldn't calculate their fares, and a brief Y2K glitch closed the Hong Kong airport for an hour. But the Tsunami began to move. Unremediated software that looked a year ahead felt the wave pass by. New York residents who renewed their vehicle registration discovered that it now had an expiration date of 1900.

Still the Tsunami raced toward shore. Welfare recipients were overpaid in New Jersey due to a Y2K glitch.

Over half of all major companies report that they have suffered at least one Y2K failure.

Still, the Tsunami is safely contained in the deep ocean. Y2K problems which occur now can be addressed like any other bug that occurs because the infrastructure is sound. The number and severity of them is manageable.

But as the Tsunami approaches the shallower water of the continental shelf, it begins to increase in height. Perhaps by September it will be apparent to many. By December, it will be apparent to all.

Those who know the Tsunami is coming are already getting away from the shoreline. Others still live in their beach houses seemingly unconcerned. And then there are those who are planning a beach party at the precise moment the Tsunami will cross the shoreline.

The Tsunami may not come as far ashore in America as it will in Italy or Venezuela, but that will be small solace to those who stayed on the beach.

The Tsunami is composed of individual drops of water, each which poses little threat. But the droplets are combined into a massive wave, and there is now no way to stop it.

The Tsunami arrives in 211 days, 8 hours, and 35 minutes from now.

God, I *LOVE* that... A perfect analogy.

Hey, thats alright! What a great anology. Going to use that on a "wanna get it, but ain"t got it yet" friend. Thanks Taz

Sorry... just can't resist...

...A four inch high Troll--who can't see over the global horizon-line- -is not going to help anyone... get to higher ground either.

Diane,

It's Darwinian selection in action. Why bother? Just let it happen... People like that won't be around to contaminate the gene pool, *IF* TSHTF. If it doesn't, well, they were right....

Like was once said in one of the old Kung Fu t.v. shows: "if you are called a name, and you ARE that thing, how can you be offended? And if you're not, what does it matter if you ARE called it?"

Trolls iz trolls...

Y2K Pro -- we're talking about Y2K, not the size of your pecker.

-- LOL (ha@ha.ha), June 03, 1999.

LOL, What makes you think that I have a pecker?

-- Y2K Pro (2@641.con), June 03, 1999.

Y2K Pro,

In reality, the original source of the problem is only 2 bytes of digital memory, this big: 00

But all it takes is some wisdom and imagination (of which you seem to be forever lacking), to conceive of how such a small thing could could destroy universes. I don't suppose you can comprehend the concept of the story about the flapping of a butterfly's wings, eventually creating a hurricane? (No, didn't think so). How about cancer, then? Do you know how big the cells are, and what they have been doing to the human race for centuries?

The tsunami analogy is a good one, and as we know tsunamis originate from earthquakes. Earthquakes originate from instabilities. A few businesses and governments in one country become unstable, a few in another, and the cumulative effect eventually becomes one large earthquake, somewhere within our world of global macroeconomics, creating the tsunami. Unless the United States is prepared to build a large enough wall to isolate itself from the rest of the world, the tsunami will eventually reach us. If you still don't get the picture, I'm afraid I'm just wasting my time. Perhaps you will be able to understand the concept as explained in a news report:

ripple effect

Credit for that post over on the Free Republic site really belongs to the Nikolai Tidal Wave thread. I chose some of the best points I saw various posters make here, and used them to write that piece this morning. I hope you don't mind the theft.

I agree with above"tsunami" analogy! By the way, its not the inches but what you do with it that counts!

-- Barb (awaltrip@telepath.com), June 03, 1999.

The only way we're going to rid ourselves of 'Pro' is by ignoring its assinine comments. So from now on, a moratorium on anything it says. Don't feed the trolls, because its the only thing they thrive on, OK? OK!

In a hotel lobby, while waiting for my brother-in-law to appear, I picked up a dusty copy of "The Third Wave" by Toffler and browsed through it. From the little bit I read, he had his reasons for beliving us to be in transition from one way of being-in-the-world to another.

The astrologers and hippies will tell you that institutions are a Piscean phenomenon, bound to vanish in the Aquarian age

The Mayans reached a similar conclusion from an altogether different angle.

Fact is, the old paradigms are at their end, shattering to bits beneath the power of the incoming wave. You can almost hear them. One institution after another.

We who see in Y2K the ultimate catalyst for, uh, sudden, dynamic transition are few in number, my friends. Let's heap together all the wisdom we can muster in this Council of the Last Hours and learn from one another all we can. Much depends on the quality of our contributions. We can make differences here and there.

I read a great Jerry Garcia line somewhere today. Correct me if I got it wrong, but I think it went like this: "Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that's it's us." Haha! Ain't THAT the truth!

Thanks Helium. Having grown up in Hawaii, that same analogy has come to my mind also. I could have never put it all together as nicely, however. It's so annoying to know something, but be at a loss for explaination! I'm printing that one!

Uh, guys, your timetable seems to be a bit long. The 8/22/1999 GPS rollover, the 9/9/1999 EOF protocol problem, the earliest embedded systems failures (as soon as late 11/1999 by some accounts), and the human reactions to everything (bank runs, stock market crash, heavy- handed gov't actions), etc. can all be expected to hit substantially before the end of 1999. (Look at the "Critical Dates" article on my website for a list of some dates & my estimates of their severity).

The govt & biz are desperate to hold things together as is for as long as possible.
No conscience or concern whatsoever for the little ppl. The lack of even the slightest consideration for the population's well-being would shock you.

We'll be surprised to see much public reaction or movement or "panic" before Christmas. Used to think it would hit around October, but after being in meetings and watching the .gov modus operandi, think TPTB will anesthetize and fudge and fiddle and fumble in their continuing contorted circus act to keep the ball o yarn spinning their way right up until rollover.
That is their PLAN and the focused lazer of their energy. Amazing. History will not forgive.
