NEED HELP - Water Pump Question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

My apologies if this has been ask before. I plan to store water in 55 gal drums in my crawl space, directly below the kitchen sink. I would like to pump the water up into the sink area. My problem; I haven't been able to find a food grade hand operated pump that is capable of pulling the water up into the kitchen (approximately 4 ft above barrel top level to the floor of the cabinet). I've also looked for a low voltage(battery or solar)water pump to do this.

Any suggestions or links to sites will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help. John

Hi,

I don't know if this helps but I saw on the back cover of the catalog from "Lee Valley Tools" (gardening catalog, better than avg. prices) a cast iron hand pump for shallow wells, drums, etc for under $30 = possible solution?

Good Luck!

John,

Go down to any good RV/Camping supply store that handles travel trailers and such. They have 12 volt pumps that are designed to pump the water from the holding tanks to the faucets/shower heads in RV equipment.

What about trying a hand-operated pump. The kind that dingy sailors use to pump out their craft. All plastic including the diaphragm.I can't remember how much they were but it wasn't that much.

You can probably find a "pitcher pump" at a plumbing supply store. They work fine, and are simple, efficient, and reliable. But why not store the water in the attic, or upstairs, and plumb the storage container into the kitchen supply pipe? Then you won't need a pump. I used to have hand pump for my kitchen sink, and it was inconvenient. Could'nt wash your hands--one hand had to be on the pump!

The RV pump is the answer.
