Paging Yourdonites For Chat On Various Subjects

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Some of us want to chat together conveniently once a week or so on selected subjects of practical interest. Firearms and family defense. Prioritizing remaining preps. Gardening. Y2K community support. Managing our relationship to the banking system. And more.

If you are interested, email me and I will put you on a list, notifying you of our "seminars." Obviously, email addresses must be authentic. However, I will not reveal your email address to the list at large.

I reserve the right to accept or reject all requests for participation, based on my decision about the character of the person making the request. No trolling of any kind will be permitted during chat sessions.

I note that chat sessions can be cut-pasted for future reference, so this will offer some of us a chance to build up our own prep archives and to ask questions "on the fly". Wherever possible, seminars will be steered by Yourdon "experts" on the subject.

Answers

I'm in. Be happy to do gardening/food related and participate in other discussions to do with frugal living and being prepared for any emergency.

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), June 02, 1999.

That sounds good to me, I'm in.

-- Nikoli Krushev (doomsday@y2000.com), June 02, 1999.

hey, Nik, gotta send me your email address! NO ONE is going to get it from me and the chat session will hide it.

On the positive side, the chat sw we will use (very easy to download) is registered with AOL and trolls can be tracked if necessary after blocking them during the session.

Re some possible add'l subjects:

ham radio

newbie preps

NWO and geopolitical issues

???

A word to newbies and lurkers: you are very welcome, though I may reasonably probe your "bona fides". If you know a regular on the forum personally or through correspondence, say so.

A word to all: apart from smashing trolling, there is nothing "secret" about this. Just another form of community-building and mutual support.

If participating people want to cut-paste pieces from a chat session and post on Yourdon as a thread, cool.

-- BigDog (BigDog@duffer.com), June 02, 1999.

BTW, Old Git is already "on" to help steer a gardening "seminar" and Arlin will do one on firearms and family defense.

-- BigDog (BigDog@duffer.com), June 02, 1999.

Perhaps start a PRIVATE forum here on Greenspun BigDog? It seems to work the same, except a PASSWORD is needed to "log on." Just a thought. <:)=

Sysman -- good question. I would think the new moderator is probably weighing things like private forums as a supplement to TB2K. As a Yourdon user, I'll support whatever is decided on that score.

This is apples and oranges to that:

"Chat", like "email" and "forums", stands on its own as a separate form of Internet media.

Plusses: real-time, serendipitous conversation, control of trolls, just plain fun.

Minusses: can be slow, conversations can lag, takes a lot of time, have to connect when the conversation is actually happening.

I see this as "both-and", not "either-or", though, as I said, chat material of use (and there'll probably be reams of it) can be posted here as a thread without too much hassle, thus sparking still more conversation.

I'm a fan of email, forums and chat, so what the hey?

One more thing on the overall drill:

1. I will provide instructions on getting and installing the needed software.

2. I will provide schedules for each seminar and interested folk will RSVP ahead of time.

3. I will invite the specific participants at the stated time.

4. Chat on subject.

5. Post interesting results to Yourdon if someone has the time/energy/motivation and if the participants agree.

This idea is different strokes for different folks, depending on what they're interested in.

Just had another thought...any chance we can get real "inside info" into these chats? Since the chat room is essentially private I would think that the information discussed could be kept confidential.

Yes/No?

The response has been great, both online/this thread and off. I'm jazzed by the opp'y to do something fresh together. Don't forget: your email has to be genuine. One of them on this post has bounced. Email me privately with your real email if you want. Once again, I won't share it and the chat software won't transmit it to others.

Back to everyone individually and together by email in the next day or so.

While you can certainly continue to post here (since I get your replies sent to me), you can also email me directly instead of posting here if you would rather do that.

-- BigDog (BigDog@duffer.com), June 02, 1999.

Big Dog,

I'd be happy to co-facilitate a seminar on newbie preps-- if I'm needed. Of course, put me on the list for notification of all seminars.

Diane, Per AOL: System Requirements for Mac version of AIM 2.x

Macintosh with a 68030 CPU (68040 recommended) or Power Macintosh MacOS 7.1 or later MacTCP 2.0.6 or Open Transport 1.1 (OT 1.1.1 recommended) 4 megabytes of free memory, 5 megabytes of free disk space 640x480 256-color display Internet connection

Have not verified. Have not used AIM (I'm a ICQ sort of person :-) but version 2.x is reported to contain the buddy chat software. Will download and install soonest free moment - email me if you have any Mac specific questions that I can help with.

-- Tweak (jimed@chatter.com), June 03, 1999.

Tweak,

Macintosh with a 68040 CPU (running OS 8.0). Has any Mac user "tested" this?

Diane

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), June 03, 1999.

Thanks, Tweak. If you could report back to the thread on your experience, would be helpful to some others (Leska also has Mac, Pat Shannon, I believe and anyone with a brain). Unlike me, though I still have the first Mac model (bought by moi on the first day they became available).

As a sometime writer, I was blown away. Funny story: was working for my father-in-law, a big-time IBMer at the time who had just left. We did a proposal on the Mac (you'll recall, it was easy to tell at the time), sent to IBM CEO and the like (huge CASE proposal). To make it "worse" my otherwise then-IBM bigot father-in-law told them they should all get Macs!

We didn't get the project. Typical of my father-in-law, may he rest in peace, he figured that was their problem and their loss.

He was right.

Count me in ---- It's so great to see so many of those who have been around for a loooong time, wanting to be involved....

-- Carlie (carlie_scott@yahoo.com), June 03, 1999.

Diane,

Per Apple Tech Note 30363, OS 8.1 will run on a 68040 with a minimum of 12 Meg of real RAM. 20Mb recomended. See for the whole story.

I have a couple of old IIci with 040 cards working as DNS and gateway servers. Still running 7.5.5 on them since I don't need all the goodies in 8.1. I'll post a message in our user group BBS and see what others say about 8.1 on a 040.

Feel free to email me with any other Mac questions. Address is correct.
