greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Forum Moderators : One Thread

Man what a bunch of wierdos!!!! This was flagged on one of the threads. So I went and took a look.

There are times when using the delete key gets pretty tempting.

*Sigh*

But again - 'tis why the [delete key] should be strictly limited to obsenities/personal attacks involving intimate "body parts"....

While I can disagree firmly with his "holier thatn thou" attitude, let him say it.

I wouldn't worry too much about those folks. They may troll us for a while, but they'll get bored and go away. Diane, you've indicated a number of times that you've got an itchy trigger finger. I think that when you're on and you respond to trolls using all the considerable grace and intelligence that you are capable of mustering, that it is much more powerful than simply removing things.

Things are amazingly calm now, considering, and there will be more heat in the future. If you're feeling itchy now, just wait! July 1 and August 22 coming up fast...

I'm sorry Patrick, but experience says your optimism here may not be justified - people have been saying 'just wait, they'll move on' since last summer...no such luck. Is there any reason we should look for the attacks to decrease? I certainly don't see one.

Arlin,

It's just that (IMHO) the troll attacks aren't that bad compared to the steps that would need to be taken to prevent it, and the potential fallout of doing so. If the volume on the forum is 10% trolldom (just a guess) I think it's worth it for the benefit of keeping things open.

It seems like there's a powerful movement afoot, in BigDog's "Paging All Yourdonites" thread to start something new, that will be more controlled. I think that's the way to do it, rather than to limit what's already there. If everybody moves to something else, where passwords are required, or whatever, and the current forum drops to next to nothing, I think that's great. Why? Because it will take some effort and responsibility on participants' part from the get-go, rather than limiting things on a forum that is now open, and has a reputation for being so.

Addenum --

By 10% trolldom, I'm not including "reasonable" arguements from "the other side." As much as I disagree with Decker, for example, I don't consider him a troll. Trolls are nasty. Decker's not. He appears to believe what he says, and I think that there's value in opposing viewpoints, if nothing else so that people responding to them can clarify in their own minds and for newbies, what the arguements are...

Thanks Patrick.

I shouldn't check the forum when I'm tired.

;-D

Their "attitude" just bothers me.

Mille pardone Ma'am. that's why you have us.

Now, to address that unscratchable itch. they tell me lotrimin (tm0 won't work. We have to use something else. I agree with Patrick that the "slippery slope" argument obtains here.

the cost benefit analysis on using the launch key to control ideology, while it is tempting, is actually a call to retreat, and an admission of inability to engage. what it does is provide the folks on the other side of the argument to point, with unfortunate justification, to the action and say "They won't even talk about alternative readings of events. What are they afraid of?" and be in the right. I prefer losing a debate on points of fact over winning on points of order. particularly this debate. 'Course I'd much rather win on points of fact. in general.

Chuck

BTW NOne of the forgoing opinion is to be construed as an argument against anything you might have done since I last looked!!

Cheers!

"terra firma"

Sheesh!

-- Anonymous, June 03, 1999

Yeah - I understand "terra feara" is pretty nasty stuff if it gets between your toes; you'd need more locomotrim, a few polly shots, and a tetnauseaous shot.

Best to have a firm grasp of reality (reality, here ?) and keep your head up.
