The SnowBall is picking up speed.

Yup people are getting ready for y2k! There's more not talking than are talking in my opinion, its who you talk to that lets you know. Well Driller in this small county of 10,000 says at least 100 calls about peole wanting hand pumps put in in the last 60 days, its an everyday thig now. you see a Generator in the back of a pickup allmost everyday as I go trough town. The local County Post hardware has 17 generators on back order. I think somethings going on!

What do you think??

I think there is very slow movement, but it's hard to say how much momentum will continue.

I live in a city and have a little over one month of supplies with plans for as much as 6 months if I have the time.

As a luxury item, I wanted to purchase some low-salt triscuits, and some ginger snap cookies. I called both places asking about how to read their dates. Both respondents sounded as though they had just figured out how to respond to the question after repeated phone calls about the subject. Both said that there was no expiration, but that freshness might me an issue. In fact, the ANNA's ginger snaps which the respondent was eating at the time were 5 years old (or so she said). Oh, triscuits uses a Y Julian Date format which you can learn about on other threads. Both boxes I found were packed early this year.

Went to a CA, Silicon Valley neighborhood party yesterday, in celebration of the holiday and to welcome new neighbors. Very little conversation about the Y2K topic, though some. They were aware.

Question mostly was "What do you think's going to happen here?"

No one talked about getting ready. Some dismissed any concerns.

*Sigh*

Timing... in all things.

Looks like your location may be waking up. Keep tabs on those barometers. In Cascadia, it's a mixed bag. Ppl seem to know why we're mono-stocking our shopping cart with soup sale cans, but they aren't smiling -- they look fearful, we're not saying a word, and we're not seeing anybody's cart like ours.

Holiday weekends are great for hitting the super sales!

We got a newsletter from the city -- the water will run (yeah, in Cascadia that's an understatement), but they won't be able to treat it past 3 days if the power goes out, and SEWAGE WILL BACK UP !!!!

Part of the reason a locality may NOT have woken up is the constant barrage of junk mail: "We're working hard on it, expect to be done, everything is fine, service will continue, blah blah blah blah we're taking care of it blah blah blah."

What we're seeing now is, well, ABC has done their best but just realized they still can't provide their normal service because XYZ, whom they are dependent on, just realized THEY won't make it, and JKL says they *would* have been OK if ABC has stayed normal, etc.

Time is short. This is going to get very scary. Ed's departure before June is disturbing. I thought things might get ugly by September. Hold on tight.

Ed's departure means y2k is winding down as an end of the world scenario.

-- Joe Six-Pack (Average@Joe.Blow), May 31, 1999.

Ed's departure means we had all better get our arses in gear and FINISH our preps, including drilling and testing all our equipment and plans. Ed, as usual, has spoken in plain direct language, and we are following his lead. And oh what a relieved feeling to be almost done! Soon we will be set and can pretend life is normal for a little while longer ...

I'm with you Doug.Think about this for a minute. How many who first (and I mean the FIRST time)heard about y2k thought to themselves, "maybe we should get a few things, just in case". Did it take awhile for it to REALLY sink in? How long? For us, it was about a month.....on an average, we're real fast learners! Let's say we get MOST people to agree there is a "potential" for tough times coming. That's good, but in the absence of even reasonably strong leadership....you know....like from perhaps Billy-Blow Job, getting MOST people to agree on even THAT starting point isn't very likely. For the sake of arguement, let's say the majority agrees the problem has potential for being severe. At what point will the Majority "see the BIG ONE". When do you think that will happen? How long have you all been agressively preparing? For us, it's been almost one year (that translates into 12 months). We're to the point where we could quite comfortably handle a depression with roaming vandils, no power, water or "petroleum products". It didn't happen in a few months....lots of blood, sweat and tears baby! If we where to "see the rabbit" come July or August of 1999.....panic wouldn't even be in the picture in THIS household...YIKES! Are you willing to trust the reactions of "the masses" that's coming into view, here? Not me buddy! I've been working with the "general public" very closely for about 25 years now....and on the whole, I've never been too impressed, I'm sorry to say. As soon as I can spot the whites in the herd's increasingly larger eyes, as they start to roll backwards....I'm locking and loading. (ever really seen a stampede? Ohhhhh, it's quite somethin')Anybody who just sits there in thier saddle, is gonna get "sucked" into the hooves and tails, my friend. You'll have so much dirt up your nose and in your eyeballs and ears, you wont be able to do anything but "clutch your saddle horn". That's just my opinion about "informing the majority" in *JUNE 1999*.

Where I'm located in northwestern Ohio, I've heard mention of people buying generators and other supplies, but I haven't seen these people personally. There is a general knowledge of Y2K and a general denial. Sure, some grasshoppers are concerned, but I don't see them preparing. Whenever I do early morning or late evening stocking up at the stores, I never encounter any other Y2K buyers, just normal housewives with carts loaded with potato chips, soft drinks, pizzas and other junk.

Recently I had a grasshopper ask me how my preps were going. She had mocked me earlier this year. I told her I didn't want to talk about it. She reacted with concern and a little apprehension. Maybe she's bothered I'm still taking Y2K very seriously. BTW, she's a Christian who won't prepare because she trusts in God to meet her needs.

I've stopped telling grasshoppers what I'm stockpiling. I've noticed they are getting a little too curious. Yep, they'll remember me when the Depression hits.
