greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I've noticed this forum is posting on 5/30. Many thanks to Ed for this forum. Has it been revived?

Straight from the horse's mouth...

"The forum will continue to live, and the threads and messages should be able to be posted without any changes.

I hope that we'll be able to make an announcement of the new forum sysop/moderator in the next day or so.

I'm dropping off the radar screen, but Y2K has not gone away -- nor have most of the forum participants. I wish all of you the very best!

Sincerely, Ed

Well I must have perceived Ed's essay differently than everyone else. I did not see one word about shutting down this forum. Did I miss something? Seems to me Ed has a lot on this plate right now and was cutting down some of his web site activities.

My activities are far less exciting than Ed's, but no less satisfying, and I too have to cut down on a few. The weeds are growing, my gardening and canning experiments demand attention, summer time means more company, especially when you live on a lake, and besides, I like to spend more time outside.

We are leaving at 7:00 AM for a long bike ride with others, on a beautiful bike trail that winds for miles through the woods..

Oh, by the way, the Indy hasn't blown up yet either, as someone on this forum predicted.

Stan Faryna brought to my attention the fact that hundreds of Y2K websites carry links to 'Yourdon.com', which is the gateway to this forum. EY removed the link to this forum from his website.

Prior to the removal of the gateway link to this forum, newbies could & did stumble in here from various spots on the 'net, through word of mouth, etc. How are newbies to find this forum now?

Tim - What thread did Ed make that post on? Name or URL, your choice.

Bingo - Simple, just change their HTML statement to http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a.tcl?topic=TimeBomb%202000%20(Y 2000) instead of http://www.yourdon.com and there doesn't even need to be any visual difference in the link click through.

Ken,

How much clearer does Ed need to be? He feels so strongly about no longer supporting this forum that he removed the link from his own website!

BTW, I really appreciate your efforts to inform us as to personal preparedness for potential nuclear strikes.

BINGO 1 - Two things:

1) It is NOT a case of not wanting to support the forum, it IS a case of wanting to drop off the Y2 radar screen, period. Maintaining a link would be intelectually dishonest. thimk on it.

2) he has found someone he trusts to carry the banner. wait and see.

KEN - We are going to need one of two things. Either a website that truthfully has only the link to this forum, or the actual address of the forum needs to be severely shortened. I certainly can't remember the fully qualified web address of this thing when I'm at work, and I can't refer anyone by saying "go to www.greenspun. yada%%%%yada yada" as they leave my car.

Just back from vacation Sat., and checked in to get the big surprise message. Thanks so much to you Ed., we will miss you but hope to see some sort of message on the other side of Jan. 1. If some powere and the net do survive,we need to talk to each other... I know by now that the forum will (?) keep going, but please, folks, someone drop me a line at my address if things become mysterious and I can't find you. All of you regulars have been an invisible family of help in a sea of indifference! Thank you to all of you, menioned by name elsewhere. Keep on keeping on...!
