Printing glossy, semi-gloss or matt finish

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Is there different photo quality paper that allows the end result to be semi-gloss or matt finish? I want to buy a Nikon 950 and Epson Sylus 750 for printing photo quality pictures, but my wife wants semi-gloss, not glossy. Any ideas?

I'm not sure about semi-gloss, but there are a variety of papers available from a number of sources. Do a search for companies that sell refill inks, most of them sell a variety of papers. You might also check Epson America's website for paper alternatives.

I am currently using an Epson Photo 750 printer with Epson Photo Paper. The paper is considered glossy but doesn't have the same apearance as a regular glossy photo. It does have some texture to it somewhat like a matte photo. You will probably find the first couple of sheets of photos will probably be practice anyway. Actually the Photo 750 comes with some sample sheets that include their Photo Paper . So I would say go ahead and get the printer, you can always try different paper as you go.

Thanks a bunch, that tells me what I thought but wanted to make sure. It should be all I need. Now just to get busy and order my stuff. Kevin

An art shop can sell you sprays that deposit a UV-resistant film on artwork, and these are available as glossy or matt. They work well on 'genuine' photographs (silver-gelatin), but I've no experience of them 'photo quality' prints. They might also help the archival properties (by keeping some UV out).

Hi, Epson PHOTO paper is superb! Dont confuse it with their photo quality paper which is only half the weight. It IS glossy but not annoyingly so. In general, even with wet darkroom prints, glossy paper will give you the SHARPEST images! Matt will give the least sharp. Regards, Howard
