1612 GMT, 990529  KLA guerrillas along the Albanian border have been engaged in a fierce offensive against Serb forces in an attempt to gain control of a mountain corridor into Kosovo that could be used for any future invasion of ground troops. Since the KLA offensive began, Serb forces have unleashed a ferocious counterattack near Padesh, currently the only route into Kosovo controlled by the KLA. As well, a group of US army troops were seen riding with KLA rebels headed toward Padesh and about a dozen Marines were seen on foot patrol in the nearby town of Barjam Curri. "If you want us to save the Albanians, don't mention that we're here," one U.S. officer said, refusing to answer any questions on the U.S. military presence in the area.
