How good is the real resolution?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Does anybody know where I can find the results of real tests of resolution of digital cameras? - The one with horizontal and vertical black and white stripes, that determines optical+CCD resolution in different areas of the image. Playing with two digital cameras I found the actual resolution 4 and more times lower that that of CCD advertized. If this is true for all digital cameras, it makes sense to wait to at least 6MP cameras before seriously considering one. Gene.

The Imaging Resource where you are right now, posts these comparisons. Go to "Digital cameras" and go to the picture pages. There is a test called "Resolutions" Remember that it takes 2 pixels side by side to show a black as well as white line. I.e. 1600 pixels can only make 800 lines of alternating black and white. In terms of tests, this seems limiting but in regular pictures the pixels will record details to the full 1600 size the camera says it does. If there is a limit, it would be a lens that is worse than the CCD it photographs on. Yes there are a few of those too.
