Negative posts seem to be declining

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I haven't been through all the threads, but I sense a definite decline in the number of troll responses and flamerthrowers over the last couple of days. Big Dog's treatise on TEOTWAWKI has drawn, so far, 40 responses--not a single flame. Maybe I just haven't noticed the negative comments, but they do seem to have dropped off. I wonder if perhaps the 60 Minutes segment was a wake-up call for some. Or is it the continuing absence of compliance notification that some Pollys predicted would be coming in waves by now. Then again, maybe it just a natural lull that occurs occasionally. Thoughts?

Vic, I think they called in sick so they could take delivery of their second ton of dried grain. They'll be back after they finish their nitrogen flushing and O2 absorbent packing.

-- Puddintame (achillesg@hotmail.com), May 26, 1999.

Thoses that wanted to prepared have done so. Those that are in the know but felt that little or no preparation would be sufficient, have had their say. So all that is left is the ROTGM (rest of the great majority) who will wake up at the last minute, AND DO SOMETHING. justthinkin

-- justthinkin com (y2kaok@justthink.com), May 26, 1999.

I think you're right, Puddin. The tenor of some Polly postings lately has seemed to have a sort of "whistling past the graveyard" undercurrent to them. This'll probably bring 'em back though.

ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
(knock on wood)

-- Leska (allaha@earthlink.net), May 26, 1999.

That's right, shhhhhhhhhh. You wouldn't want reality to upset your carefully laid out apocalypse fantasies - would you?

-- Y2K Pro (2@641.com), May 26, 1999.

Reality is like Janus. It looks both ways. Adding a bit more fuel to the growing blaze that all is not well with the Pollys evidences itself in the "Has anyone else seen this" thread down a few. On Der Boonka, they've found it necessary to take a legitimate story and plug in GI names to fire interest in Internet oversight and control.

-- Vic (Rdrunner@internetwork.net), May 26, 1999.

Mutha, Do you know a single normal person? By the way, we're all interested to know that you spend your time on that which you believe to be frivolous. A word of advice, if you're ever accused of a crime, hire a lawyer. You are very talented at talking yourself into a corner.

-- Joe Normal (top o' the bell curve@peoria.com), May 26, 1999.

Y2K Pro,

A good many of us posting here are Y2K middle-grounders.

Will you please get over assuming that the "whole" Forum has "apocalypse fantasies."

When you see that kind of post that you PERSONALY object to, then respond, like the rest of us do. But your constant agitation on the "end of the world" stuff needs a readjustment and a reality check, IMHO.

We ALL live on the same planet. Y2K does not take sides. It is bi- partisan. It will unfairly treat us all unequally, differently and unexpectedly.

And, for the record, you are posting here on the "Yourdon" Time Bomb 2000 Forum, not on BIFFY or DeBunker. Please recall where "home" is.

We are "trying" to be more civil now. Please respect that desire.

Some of us have gone into lurk mode, said the poster.

-- Vic (Rdrunner@internetwork.net), May 26, 1999.

Ditto...Mutha.

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), May 26, 1999.

Alas! They are still with us. But they have obviously been infected with the Reality Virus, and their madcap melodies are starting to sound shrill and ever weaker.

Sandmann

-- Sandmann (Sandmann@alasbab.com), May 26, 1999.

Nah, we're just losing interest. The debate is moving into the public spotlight. The doom message will die there.

-- one o' those bad trolls (.@...), May 26, 1999.

No, the debate is not moving into the public arena. The public is fast asleep on this issue and will remain so until the end of the year.

-- Amused (amused@laughing.com), May 26, 1999.

I agree with amused. I too have noticed the flaming is slowing, and what a relief. We are are individuals with our own opinions and that is what makes this site so interesting. It is not making good use of time to waste it by arguing. After all, it is okay to agree to disagree, that is the american way....

-- consumer (private@aol.com), May 26, 1999.

You're pretty vague in your description of "negative posters." Personally, I find the terms Polly and Doomlit NEGATIVE. Personally, I'd like to see more reasonable discussion without these terms entering into the picture. I'd like to see the term TROLL used in it's true meaning (as in that poster who threw in 2-3 pages of nonsense recently on every other thread.)

Just my $.02, Vic.

Anita

-- Anita Spooner (spoonera@msn.com), May 26, 1999.

Fair enough, Anita. By negative posters, I meant those whose mission seems to be to discourage forum participants from preparing to the extent they believe it is necessary. I did not--and do not--mean to include those who present facts or opinions occasioned by a genuine belief in their position. I include you in that category. The negative posters are those who add nothing of value to the discussion ... on either side.

-- Vic (Rdrunner@internetwork.net), May 26, 1999.

This is prom and final exam season, so the flamers are too busy right now.

They'll be back in a week or two.

-- GA Russell (garussell@russellga.com), May 26, 1999.

Mutha,

There IS NO burden of proof hanging over either pollys or doomers save that which a certain number of the self-righteous and overly self-impressed have assumed for themselves. The simple fact is that NO ONE KNOWS what will happen. The simple fact is that NO ONE KNOWS how bad it will be. The simple fact is that NO ONE CAN TELL how long problems might last. There is a vast amount of spin, both doomer and polly. There are few reliable predictions.

But time will tell. You can spend your time shedding more heat than light on the issues involved, as you choose. I have chosen to make what I consider reasonable preparations. I can afford to be wrong. My family can afford for me to be wrong.

Can you, and yours??

-- Lee (lplapinN@hotmail.com), May 26, 1999.

Okay, so maybe I have stashed away a little food and water.

-- Y2K Pro (2@641.com), May 26, 1999.

yeah, a snickers bar and a canada dry

-- h (h@h.h), May 26, 1999.

I think that most of the less-civilized pollys are taking advantage of the summer weather, doing their grasshopper imitation while we GI's follow the ant model. These choices will be rather striking in their fruits in what is now less time than a human pregnancy takes. Anything unpleasant that happens to Mutha brightens my day. That individual has yet to post anything I have seen that does not have a pointlessly rude and crude vs. useful ratio of over 10:1. On another subject, what is this Der Boonka term I keep hearing? It is never explained.

Minnesotasmith,

It isn't important enough to worry about, that's why you aren't familiar with it. It's pretty much the breeding grounds for Y2K Pro and Mutha Nachu. 'Nuff said! I went there once, that's all it took. It's a small minded site run by small minded people. If you think it gets ugly here sometimes then maybe you should check it out. You will feel positively clean when you come back here! I felt like I had stumbled into a WAREZ site. Come to think of it, those sites are usually run by adolescents too.

-- Dian (bdp@accessunited.com), May 26, 1999.

Oh yeah, this place is clean. All rooms with padded walls are kept sterile. Didn't you know that? Federal regs, you know.

-- adolescent (doubt@ny.kidshereatall), May 26, 1999.

Adolescent,

Nope, never been in a padded cell...err room, but feel free to share more of YOUR experience.

I love the hardcore polyanna's,I don't think I'd hang out here if not for them.they always need to be "right"and they always need the last word, desperatly asserting that y2k is not an objective problem, but rather a matter of perspective,as if y2k cares what we,or or the debunkers think.the question seems to be if we should convince our parents/grandparents to buy dried beans and canned tuna.y2k pro never irritates me because I know what a lonely pathetic little masterbator he is,an endless source of amusement, enjoy

"I plan on doing most of my bartering with polyanna's.Strictly high profit, high gougeable items,t.p.,cough syrup(generic),anti diahreah (worth their weight in dark matter if the sh*t comes down)fever breakers, and of course TAMPONS!!!!a great deal of G.I.'s talk about their preparations without ever mentioning tampons, and there is a huge dependancy of just in time tampons. My wife has purchased several of the washable, reusable menstrual cup,"the keeper"they were 35 bucks. If possible problems run longterm, these will be essential, there's more about them on the y2k women site, one of the best prep sites.zoob. -- zoobie (zoob@aol.com), April 25, 1999."
