Senate Y2k Committee Community Preparedness Hearing Over--I have it on tape

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

O.K. guys--after the '60 minutes marathon,' I'm not sure I can transcribe the entire thing, but I'll do my best to hit the highlights.

There were some really GOOD comments! (I had to stifle my laughter at a couple of points not to ruin the tape!)

Stay t-u-u-u-ned. . .

:)

Uh. . .a cheering section appreciated while I grind. . .(hee hee)

Also--on the '60 Minutes' transcript--I will do the minor tweaking necessary to make it match the official one--then repost on a new and final thread.

(My husband's gonna kill me 'cause I'm not working! I know! Everyone send me a dollar and I can TELL him I'm working!)

Everybody:

FM -

So what's the address? Even better (more anonymous), is there a PO box we can use? Transcripts run $8.00 and up, so paying only a buck is a serious bargain!

Aw heck, now I've gone and given her ideas... 8-}]

-- Mac (sneak@lurk.hid), May 25, 1999.

FM as I said in that stream of consciousness pitiful attempt, I am NOT WORTHY!!

I wish I could do a Wayne and Garth bow here. You'll just have to immagine it!

Mac! Mac! What the heck does 8-}] mean, and yes there IS a P.O. Box. But before I go into that (if I do), heads up:

Thanks to the "diggers" who populate this forum, we have the following links:

For the Full Text Witness Statements (posted by Diane Squire) go to:

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000s3z

To view and hear the hearing using a Real Player (link posted by Ron Rodgers) go to:

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000s3Y

Now,--Yourdon's live testimony differed from that which he submitted in writing. I'm checking the others for differences as well, so I'll plan to proceed if you all think this is worth it. If, for example, you want to print out the transcripts of the live testimony (including the questions and answer sessions) for someone who doesn't have a computer, doesn't have cable tv, doesn't have a real player, etc., etc.

Vote now! Vote often! (Otherwise I really need to abandon this in favor of sorely needed efforts to keep a roof over our heads!)

(Last time I checked those roofs cost more than a dollar!)

:)

-- FM (vidprof@aol.com), May 25, 1999.

Oh,. . one more item: For those of you who aren't aware, the hearing was two hours long. One hour for each panel.

:)

-- FM (vidprof@aol.com), May 25, 1999.

I vote YES!!

The reason... I'm very interested in seeing what was "actually" said, versus what the written testimony reads, versus what the press finally reports.

This is our one "live-action" test case on Y2K preparedness, and whether or not public awareness can shift, if the media helps, not hinders.

Thanks for your efforts FM!

Kudos and gratitude!

Diane

FM - So heroic of you to be offering these transcripts! I second Diane, but particularly for Paloma's testimony since her written comments appear to be much longer than what she would have had time to say. (And besides, Chuck has me intrigued on her follow-up to Ed Yourdon's personalized testimony). I'll be just as happy with real audio, but I'm not clear yet whether it will be available. Thanks again for however far you get!

CHUCK bowing and scraping again. People, you have NO CLUE what this VERY NICE LADY is doing for you.

Sending gratitude and wishes for your good fortune...AND a vote for the "live" event version.

-- Sara Nealy (keithn@aloha.net), May 25, 1999.

O.K. gang, here's what I'm going to do:

The "Force" must be with us, because a neighbor just unexpectedly called and offered not only to pick up my little one from school, but also take her to see the new "Star Wars" movie. Out of the blue. Weird.

Despite the dirty laundry lurking, (fortunately I can't see it from my home office!) I suddenly have some extra time this afternoon.

The only interruption I may experience could come from my very stressed out husband (who runs a financially struggling start-up operation that has me more than a bit worried right now) who could bop in the door and wonder what I'm doing. (I wear many hats in my work, among them, unpaid labor for his business and searching for new clients for mine.)

My solution is that I will tell him I am working. And I WILL be. Why? Because I'm now going to partially "out" myself, and post the name of my business and my mailing address, in the hope that when your mail goes out tomorrow, some of you will find my efforts of enough value to send me a dollar. Or. . .ten dollars, or a million dollars! (Hee Hee) Whatever fits your budget, and whatever you think this is worth to you, or to those who may benefit by reading it. Let your conscience be your guide.

Also, I'd appreciate it if you'd post elsewhere on the forum (and in other newsgroups you frequent) about what I'm getting ready to do. That will make it even more worthwhile to my family.

As some of you know, or may have suspected, I'm a former reporter. Without saying too much about myself (I've been as famous as I ever want to be, and value my privacy), Jim Adams' Senate hearing comments regarding the shift of television news toward "entertainment" rang very true with me--one reason I decided to end a very promising career. I am telling you this so that if you share the transcript with anyone, you can correctly tell him/her that this synopsis/transcript is the work of a former television news reporter who spent many years covering politics on a national and local level. All true.

That said, my mailing information is as follows (and I do take checks):

SCI Publications 5694 Plymouth Road, Suite 290 Ann Arbor, Michigan 48105

Thank you all in advance. With two hours of testimony to grind through, this is going to take some time. Encouragement in the form of monetary and verbal good will offerings will be most appreciated. In short, Keep up the Cheering! Spread the Word! Get those checks in the mail to keep the husband happy! (Hee hee. . .)

God bless and thank you in advance. I promise Ill do my best for you. Keep checking the thread. Ill post sections as I complete them, and when its all done, Ill wrap it up in a pretty package on a different thread.

For now,. . .grabbing a Tylenol and rolling up my sleeves. . .

:)

8-}] is just one kind of "smiley", AKA an "emoticon", which is an Internet convention used to signify that the writer is being light-hearted, unserious, or even facetious. The basic smiley is :) -- you need to look at it with your head listing off to port a bit to get the full effect. There are tons of 'em...

Off to find an envelope and a stamp!

-- Mac (sneak@lurk.hid), May 25, 1999.

Thanks Mac! Many blessings on you and yours.

And now. . .the grunt work is calling!

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! I don't get cable and have been going nuts since I couldn't watch. You are performing a wonderful service and definitely deserve some compensation.

-- R (riversoma@aol.com), May 25, 1999.

Thank you FM for your effort. It is good for those of us that can not listen live or watch on TV to find out the news. You are truly a citizen of this cyber home here....

I vote YES, please keep transcribing......
