Update Status of USPS, Fedex and UPS?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'm asking, not telling. Can anyone give a factual heads-up, but definitely including rumors, anecdotes, speculation and your basic Yourdonite speculative analysis? My business and perhaps our economy depends as much on these three and their cousins as on utilities, telecom and banks.

Please, no old news (ie, February-type stuff and before ....

I have a friend who works for Fedex. In college he graduated with a degree in comp/eng. from a very good school. Anyway, since I became a GI anytime I e-mail him about y2k he responds that he cannot answer that or cannot say now. We live very far apart and haven't seen each other in years but hav ekept in touch, it is not like him to be so evasive. I have known him since I was four years old .

Big Dog did you post earlier or was that someone posting as you? I know this has been a problem. Let us know!

BigDog & All-- If anything else goes down, and the Post Office stays up, the Post Office will be negatively impacted. The reason being is that almost everyone is using the Post Office as a part of their contingency plan. e-mail down? No problem, we'll just send the information Express Mail! Telephone down? No problem, I'll just send each of my family members a post card with my status. We can expect that their workload will probably increase, and service will probably slow somewhat.

You did think to save post cards and a sheet of post card stamps, didn't you...

On the other hand, if the Post Office goes down hard, no one else can make up the slack...the mail volume is just too great.

Mad Monk, you just hit on something I had completely neglected to consider... thanks for the heads up.

BD, sorry, can't help you bud, but I'm waiting to read some good stuff on this thread!

No facts, just an observation.

If the USPS makes it intact, no longer will anybody speculate about whether miracles occur. If anyone thinks that the megacorporation that makes you stand in line for 20 minutes or more to buy stamps (with unmanned teller booths abundant) is going to conquer the y2k thing, well, fine. It's just a gut feeling I have...

Johnny -- Right, the earlier post today wasn't me but a troll (check out the thread for my response).

You know me as a banker. But my husband works for UPS. I have asked him a number of times what his company's status is. He has no idea. He's just a driver - I guess the company doesn't include them in their information distribution list. They should - after all, I'm not the only one asking him about Y2K. Many of his customers would like to know too. Because he can't answer, the company looks bad. They quit using paper several years ago, opting for electronic diad boards. They insert these diads into a slot at the end of each day to download the day's information into the mainframe. (please excuse the lack of technical terms) They may be ready, but they don't seem to be in any hurry to tell anyone. Just my perspective. Thank you.
