This forum is for Y2K pessimists; if you don't believe like we do LEAVE

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Due to the recent 60 minutes airing I want to make sure and warn all newcomers that this is a PESSIMISTS forum. We do NOT accept good news here; y2k *WILL* end the world as we know it. prepare accordingly.

Don't waste your time with pollys like Poole, Hewitt, Decker, etc.

They know squat about y2k.

For those who are new to this forum:

The above posting was not from the man many of us know as "BigDog". Nor is the statement in any way a statement of consensus. This forum is a constantly evolving place for discussion, as declared in the following "ABOUT" statement, found on the 'TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) New Questions' page:

"This forum is intended for people who are concerned about the impact of the Y2000 problem on their personal lives, and who want to discuss various fallback contingency plans with other like-minded people..."

Bingo --

Thank you, you're right. That wasn't me. I can be stubborn at times, but, thankfully, I don't post that way and it is or should be obvious to the regulars.

MESSAGE TO TROLLS: You've got to be more subtle.

My apologies to the Georgia folks! The conference ended later than expected and I wouldn't have been able to make it. Hope you had a great time. Then, pretending to still be 18 years old, I drove 900 miles home in one gulp.

Do the words, "wet noodle" mean anything?

-- BigDog (BigDog@duffer.com), May 24, 1999.

One other tip-off: I obviously "waste" lots of time with Decker, Poole and, now, alas, Hewitt, no? So why would I recommend that others don't? ;-)

To Newbies: A word of caution: Any time you see a rude or outrageous post, it is likely the work of the bored destructive trolls. They are annoying pests but easy to swat past as you read threads.
BigDog is a regular contributor who is polite and well-informed and adds much to our discussions.

Beware the unreasonable malicious intentions of anybody who would dissuade you from preparing for life's increasing uncertainties.

[Hey, this might be fun. I can deconstruct my "troll BigDog counterpart"]

Due to the recent 60 minutes airing I want to make sure and warn all newcomers that this is a PESSIMISTS forum.

[Of course not. I am a Y2K optimist and we are glad to help all newcomers try to arrive at their own opinion, wherever it falls, and to suggest helps to preparation according to their OWN decision]

We do NOT accept good news here;

[Dead wrong. I have accepted lots of good news (SSA, progress on utilities, financial systems, embedded systems)]

y2k *WILL* end the world as we know it.

[Regrettably, that remains a real possibility whose probability we can't measure.]

prepare accordingly.

[OK, BigDogTroll, I do agree with that!]

Don't waste your time with pollys like Poole, Hewitt, Decker, etc. They know squat about y2k.

[It's not a waste of time, though it would be far better if they acknowledged that they (especially Poole and Hewitt) have not the slightest interest in learning anything about Y2K that doesn't fit their position. The regulars know that a charge like that about me is typical but not factual from my months of actual posts. They do know a little about Y2K but it is compromised by their prejudices.]

Big Dog:

The Georgia get-together was me and Robert Cook. We had a very nice discussion, but when you get two engineers together, you don't get a whole lot of perspective. We missed you. Hope you survived your trip in one piece and recover soon.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), May 24, 1999.

BigDog,

School must be out or something. There's a little troll trying to post in my name on the reaction to 60-minutes thread.

*Sigh*

BigDog,

Personally, I'd be hurt if you stopped posting to me. :(

Mutha, what an idiot. -- Leska (allaha@earthlink.net), March 31, 1999.

(You will be dead soon. Moron.)

(I am not 'bent' out of shape at you. Do as yopu please. Most morons like you will. You dissuade people from making serious preparations. You watch the first big program that is completely devoid of any happy face comments and STILL conclude bump in the raod. You deserve what is going to happen to you. Your dependents and family do not.)

-- Paul Milne (fedinfo@halifax.com), May 23, 1999.

Thanks Andy,

Fuck you, "appreciative" [triple x, huh?] I have had enough of Decker's bullshit. This ends now!

No more entertaining his banal posts, no more "gentleman's" debate.

-- BigDog (BigDog@duffer.com), May 06, 1999.

Hewitt and poole - you'reso called Christian web sites will cost lives. You should both be ashamed of yourselves. You would both do well to just shut the f%%k up than continue with your happy happy scenarios. Milne is right on the button with the pair of you and morons is too good a word for you. Yep - murderers, if things go bad. If they are not so bad you've saved some people from thinking about taking responsibility for themselves. But hey, you two know better. Let's not beat about the bush here. Murderers.

Mild Mannered,

People posting hot off the submit button, are one thing. And sometimes, their remarks need to be looked at in context. It is preferable if most of us practice some flaming restraint.

However, hi-jacking one's name, or handle, is quite different... and a despicable act, IMHO.

Its NOT a particularly honorable action, and should be discouraged.

Personally, I am glad to see any TRUE good news posted here. Each factual item can mean one less thing that I need worry about. But there are still enough signs pointing to a potential disaster that responsible prudent preparation is the only reasonable course of action. There is also the fact that much of what is touted as good news is merely someone's meaningless press release. We'd like to see real facts...

-- Mad Monk (madmonk@hawaiian.net), May 24, 1999.

Mutha -- Thanks, you're right that the italicized stuff isn't me either and given your convictions about all this, I appreciate your helping to keep the record straight on my authentic posts.

Poole -- Don't worry, there'll be no need for you to feel hurt for a long time, alas!!

-- BigDog (BigDog@duffer.com), May 24, 1999.

Why am I getting Star Trek (Spock/Kirk version) flashes here?

The one where the enemy got the crew fighting each other so they could take over the Enterprise. (Didn't have any real weapons of their own, just psychological influence.) I think they even used fake Spock, fake Kirk, etc. to start fights.

Occasionally, even our resident Klingons act up in nasty ways, but this time they're part of our crew, and they make our voyage where none has gone before so much more interesting. (Plus their knowledge of alien technologies is indispensable!)
