Looking for GI's in Wisconsin

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

It seems like trying to find a "GI" in Wisconsin is like trying to find a Bears fan in Green Bay.

I'm looking to find a couple of people to start some dialogue / eat some cheese with.

Let me know if there are any of you out there!

Regards,

Dan

I've E-mailed your post to Dennis Olson. He posts here on occasion, and I'm sure the E-mail will wake him up.

I thought my name would be a dead give-a-way, but maybe not.

Recently got an email from Dennis Olson, so he is interested in fellow Wisconsinites also. Be glad to start a real dialogue - you can send me an email - narnia4@usa.net is a real address.

yeah there aren't many of us,but my adress is real...we should learn from the texans here and get together.....

I live in Milwaukee, and you're right: it seems that there aren't alot of GI's here. Just go to Sam's or Menards. Tons of stuff that other Yourdonites complain that are "out of stock" in their towns.

Feel free to contact me, also. I'm in the Milwaukee area, and the e-mail is legit.

-- Steve Hartsman (hartsman@ticon.net), May 24, 1999.

I'm just south of La Crosse and the e-mail address is real.

-- David Palm (djpalm64@yahoo.com), May 24, 1999.

Yep. Count me in. The e-mail addy is for HOME; the RFC one is WORK.

(you that've seen that one know who you are....)

Don't forget the brats!!

I urge all Wisconsin GI's to visit the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Online Y2K forum. I have been the lone GI there since last September, and am being attacked personally. Your input would be welcome and appreciated. I urge you to post anonymously, however; I chose not to with ugly results, which you can see for yourself if you browse through both recent and archived threads.

-- Steve Hartsman (hartsman@ticon.net), May 24, 1999.

Steve,

I responded to a story about Y2K and banking in the Milwuakee Journal and almost had my head torn off by a few bankers. Those guys are animals. :)

Steve: I gave up on the MJS forum becuz of that guy Murphy. I don't have the time to scroll thru all of his blather. I guess he won, eh?

I also am near Milwaukee, and the address is real. (New one soon, though.) I will be a speaker at the Y2K Expo. in Waukesha June 4th and 5th. Hope to meet you there.

Would like to talk with others- I'd pretty much decided to go underground after this weekend. We're in Madison- might try to make the Waukesha Expo- haven't missed one yet.

Dan,

If you had attended either of the previous Y2K Expos at the Waukesha County Expo center, you'd realize that it is a little earsier than finding a bears fan in green bay (maybe not much but at least a little)... I attended the first, it was interesting. My reaction was that there were too many food vendors and not enough areas represented. But my particular bias would hold that any high priced food stuffs representation was too much. I can go to there grocery store and stock a pantry with plenty of food with shelf lives well into 2000 and beyond, and if nutritional value is a concern, there is no shortage of vitamins available. But then again I not stocking a bomb shelter, just a large pantry from which I can use and rotate stock.

Perhaps Y2k preparation seems somewhat of a non event in Wisconsin because many area still strong ethnic identities. Though not as plentiful as 30 yrs ago, there are households who routinely put up the garden and maintain a large pantry. These are folks who are already prepared for months of layoff or hard times, so putting up a pantry is a non issue... Just a thought.

Good Luck in your efforts and don't forget that Wisconsin holds what I believe is the country's largest renewable energy fair each summer in Amherst. (Truth in advertising disclaimer, I'm not connected with the fair, but plan to be there...)

Steve,

I respect your efforts with the Milwaukee Jurinal, but come on... I discontinued my subscription a couple years ago after getting tired of the what I viewed as chronic misinformation. I got tired of reading reports covering local issues - that covered personalities but not the issues. Why subject yourself to abuse from people who won't or can't read the news it reports with a critical eye. This forum tends to go the the other extreme, but at least valid and useful self sufficiency/ disaster survival information is available.

Anyone interested in a Yourdon gathering of the Cheeseheads in or around Brewtown?

-- Steve (hartsman@ticon.net), May 26, 1999.

Steve,

Sounds good, I'd try to attend. Could do something in conjucntion with next Y2K Expo in Waukesha, June 4+5 I think. That way we might get the opportunity to meet folks from other states.

Sounds doable, but do you really want to invite all the FIBs?

-- Steve Hartsman (hartsman@ticon.net), May 27, 1999.

FIB's? that's a new on for me. If things get real bad never know when/where a friendly face could be nice to see - besides if someone comes from 100 or more miles away, there is a good chance they are taking their Y2K seriously.

In Packerland tradition, how about 'tailgate' party?

According to today's Wisconsin State JournalAlliant Power Company is going to have a 30 minute TV commercial about Y2K and wants to charge each customer .50 to produce it.

Sorry if this is a little off topic. :)

-- Gail (Gail@msn.com), May 28, 1999.

30 minute commercial?! Sure that's not 30 seconds?

How about a Brewer tailgate? Or a Summerfest soiree? I'm flexible.

-- regular (zzz@z.z), May 28, 1999.

FIB's, BTW, are a not-so-kind description of our flatland neighbors to the south. Decorum prevents me from writing it here. Most cheeseheads know what it means.

-- regular (zzz@z.z), May 28, 1999.

NO!!! Here is the snip from the paper:

"Alliant Energy Corp. is spending nearly $25,000 to broadcast a 30- minute television program about the year-2000 problem.

The program will be aired on eight TV stations in Alliant's four state service area, including WMSN (Ch 47) and Channel 55 in Madison."

Pick up a paper and read for yourself. :)

-- Gail (Gail@msn.com), May 28, 1999.

I guess the word "commercial" is inaccurate then. A 30-minute paid program is more accurate. Propaganda may be the most accurate, actually. I should hope customers will complain about the request to pay for this.

-- regular (zzz@z.z), May 28, 1999.

Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuse me! I stand corrected.

-- Gail (Gail@msn.com), May 28, 1999.

Regular,

Oh now I kind of get it, with a little imagination there are lots of ways I can fill in the blanks. It occurs to me that cool weather crops such as dandelion, lettuce, spinach, peas...can be harvestable in southern Illinois weeks before they are in southern Wisconsin and even months before northern Wisconsin - presuming some rationed gas is available, a friend to your south could be a friend indeed - the question you'll need to ask is what you will provide in return.

Hey Dan,

Maybe your right and there are only a handfull of WI GI's - either that or they are so well prepared that they take their holiday weekends seriooosssssssssssllllly and party till the cheese curds are warm Tuesday morning....

Hope to catch some of you at the Expo.

Dan, Steve and all,

Anyone get to that expo? Between the underwhelming response here on the forum and the sponsors' gun buy back stunt, I passed. Did I miss anything?
