This is a question regarding the resent 60 Minute segment on Y2K. Being a cynic as a am I was asking this question as I was watching this segment on TV tonight. I'm very familar with the spin that seems to abound about Y2K by the media and our government. Why now in the middle of May does the media [government] seem to come out of the closet on this issue at this time. What is their agenda?

The media and government knows at this point, the public 99.9%, can not accept the facts and certain life style changes of y2k, therefore the media can say almost anything as long as they point out that they are working hard on the problem, that is enough for the people to hold onto.

The public have placed more faith in their government and big business than in god and common sense.

DENIAL IS A RELIGION, people will lose faith in the system only when the lights go out. And we all know that y2k will produce long lasting problems. But who want to stop and think about it, when we are making so much money and loving it.

"Senator Says Reno Should Quit Over China Spy Probe Updated 2:04 AM ET May 24, 1999 By Donna Smith WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the Senate Intelligence Committee called Sunday on Attorney General Janet Reno to resign, saying she had not properly handled an investigation into suspected Chinese spying on a U.S. nuclear research facility.

"I believe it is time (for Reno to quit), considering her role, or her lack of role, trying to defend the indefensible. It is time for new leadership at the Justice Department," Sen. Richard Shelby, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told CBS' "Face the Nation."

"I believe the attorney general ought to resign, and she ought to take her top lieutenants with her. She ought to do it now for the sake of the country," the Alabama Republican added.

The Justice Department and the FBI are likely to come under fire for their handling of the investigation in a report to be made public Tuesday. The report on the allegations of spying and U.S. technology transfers to China was prepared by a special Congressional committee chaired by Rep. Christopher Cox, a California Republican.

The Cox report is expected to say China obtained information on seven nuclear weapons designs -- much of the modern U.S. arsenal. Intelligence officials and others have said U.S. secrets probably accelerated China's nuclear development and were likely to show up in future weapons.

Shelby accused the Justice Department of being adrift and said many members of Congress had little confidence in its leadership.

Sen. Robert Torricelli, a New Jersey Democrat, stopped short of calling for Reno's resignation but said it was time for President Clinton to have a chat with the nation's top law enforcement official about her future.

"I think it is time for President Clinton to have a conversation with the attorney general about her ability to perform her duties and whether or not it is in the national interest for her to continue," Torricelli told CBS.

The Justice Department has been accused of making repeated mistakes in the spying investigation. Justice officials have been criticized for failing to approve a wiretap on the telephone of Wen Ho Lee, a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico who was suspected of passing classified nuclear weapons information to China.

Lee has not been charged with any crime, and China has denied stealing U.S. secrets.

Congressional investigators have also questioned why the department turned down a request by the FBI to monitor the scientist's computer.

White House spokesman Barry Toiv said Clinton supported his attorney general.

"The president has full confidence in Attorney General Reno," Toiv told Reuters. "She has initiated a review of this entire matter, and we look forward to seeing the results of that review."

Congressional investigators have also raised questions about when Clinton and other senior administration officials were told of the spying allegations.

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said she had not been briefed on the nuclear espionage case before 1999.

"I found out about it earlier this year," Albright told CBS. "I was not briefed. That was wrong, and I made that clear, and that has been rectified."

She declined to comment further on why she was not told of the alleged spying but said the administration understood the situation was serious.

"We believe that it is very important not to have any illusions about China," she said. "I have never had any illusions about China."

Cox told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the report, to be released Tuesday, would show Chinese espionage to be continuing today and that both Democrats and Republicans on the committee were eager to work in a bipartisan way to make sure the leaking of U.S. nuclear weapons information was stopped.

"The espionage did not begin last week," Cox said. "It has been occurring for some decades. Importantly, it continues, we state in our report, to this very day."

He said for that reason, both parties wanted to fix any problems and "lock up" the damage.

Bank stocks sell off today, the market is down 180 points, the volume is low, all the day after a revealing 60 Minutes telecast. Why are they doing this now, what are they trying to divert our attention from. I have to ask myself "What is up?"

The China scandal seems to be surfacing into the forefront. One could speculate that the media may be starting to place more emphasis on Y2k to redirect the spotlight. One could hypothesize that viewer attention towards Kosovo, high school shootings, and politicians arguing over gun control laws is beginning to wane.

Of course, another high school shooting or a serious dip in the stock market could take center stage.

Whatever reason, I think accurate information has been slow getting out because the powers-that-be don't want the people looking for answers to know that they don't know what will happen, have all of the answers, and that they may not be able to help everyone who asks for it.

If this is the case, trust and credibility in government and business could take a blow.

It's going to be interesting to see how this period will be penned in the history books!

Today an analyst with First Boston (Michael Mayo), officially downraded four major banks from hold to SELL, due to Y2k sytemic risk exposure! The banks were Chase, Citiroup, Bank One, and J.P Morgan. It is a rare event for an analyst to actually downgrade anything to SELL,(much less banks). Normally, they use the "hold" designation is the most negative designation given major institutions. The market (DOW) fell about 175 points, NASDAQ fell about 66 points.

Interestingly, the analyst (Mayo), indicated that he was most concerned about "3rd party risk", among international banks and vendors

In fact, the poster has placed a few other gems on other threads, and even linked to the site (www.subgenius.com). You'll have to do your research a little better.

Our esteemed CPR on the other hand is a practicing christian, a fact which he is usually more than happy to divulge, and I sincerely doubt he'd have the time or desire to dally with the Church of Bob Dobbs. Back to the drawing board buddy. Nice (if predictable) try though.

May is a rating sweeps month (/Feb/Aug/Nov). August sweeps are the least important, so May is a biggie that essentially sets ad rates for half the year.
