SUGGESTIONS FOR THE NEXT NORTHERN VIRGINIA GET TOGETHER: PARK PICNIC OR STEAK HOUSE
Many of us enjoyed the first Northern VA board meeting that they'll be coming around for the second. We may even improve upon that good time. I'd like to open the floor to the possibility of a Saturday afternoon picnic in a park. I also think that another calendar date is best as I'd like to better coordinate getting some more people to come on out and meet us. There seems to be several advantages to have a picnic:
+ I'd like to see Sally talk about Y2K cooking and demonstrate some of Y2K Kitchen's finest. I'd expect we could all throw in something from firewood to stuff on a grocery list. Maybe a small honorarium too for Sally... as well as some assistants to keep her from breaking a sweat.
+ I'd like to have a show and tell of Y2K (or "smart living") things like Aladdin lamps and Petromax lanterns, Berkfield Water Cans and Katadyn Water Pumps, solar ovens and multi-fuel/other cook stoves, solar battery chargers and hand-cranked radios and flashlights, etc.
+ Beyond a show and tell of things, their may be an opportunity for a show and tell of skills from bucket gardening to sprouting in bags. I wish Old Git could come out, or have Carla Emery stand in for her!
+ I've not thought this out, but an opportunity to trade things too. I have a feeling that some of us may have some worthwhile things that we don't need and someone else might. Of course, keeping it friendly and casual would be the idea. Got too many seeds or too many oil lamps?
+ Smokers and non-smokers would have the opportunity to talk to each other from upwind/downwind.
+ Opportunity for pot luck of sides, drinks, cigarettes, and cigars.
+ Pets may be allowed (on leash).
If there isn't complete consensus on the worthwhileness of a picnic, I'll just get work on that new date. If there's consensus, I'll start looking (I welcome suggestions). It'll take me a week to figure out a suitable location. Also, I or someone else may be able to help locate hotels, friendly couches, or guest rooms-- if you are coming from out of state (that would include Chuck and the rest of you on the forum).
REGISTRATION IS FREE
I will contact everyone by telephone and email regarding updates on the second get together. If you didn't email me an indication of your interest to be there + a work and/or home phone number, please do so. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Also let me know here or by email if you like the idea of the park. Or steakhouse. Time is running out.
CORRECTION TO DATE AND NEW POSSIBILITIES
Previously, we had set the date for the second Y2K get together on the 29th of this month. Scott Johnson of Y2K Today and many others on this board and from elsewhere find this a bad date. Here are some ideas:
JUNE 5, 1999. Carla Emery, Author of Best-Selling Book, "Encyclopedia of Country Living" will be in Northern Virginia on June 4, 1999. If you come a day early, you can hear her lecture: Y2K - Understanding the Problem. This 7:00 pm talk will cover: Water-Heat-Light, Y2K - The Countdown, Food Storage, Wind/Solar/Wood Power & Gardening/Livestock. I will also try to invite her to the get-together. We can also discuss public reaction to the 60 Minutes Y2K feature which aired tonight.
JUNE 19, 1999. T-MINUS 200 DAYS happens on June 15, 1999. We will be able to discuss YARDENI'S CONFERENCE, public reactions, the official actions, and other new developments as ELITES try to INFLUENCE folks according to the recommendations of the Navy War College Y2K Study.
Sincerely, Stan Faryna
