Digital zooms

Why is it that all Digital Cameras have such poor zoom capabilities? For my outdoor photos with 35mm,I like to have at least a 300mm zoom with me! I want to go digital, but I don't see any cameras to speak of with more than a 3x [aprox 105mm comperable] zoom. Also I read in some specs. that a given camera has a 3x zoom and a 2x digital zoom. I don't understand this, nor how this would add up if there are two methods of zooming! I have a HP Photo printer at home and can print a very nice 8X10 if I can get an image that is 1600X1200 pixels. I am searching for a Digital Camera that can produce a quality 1600X1200 image with a powerful zoom of at least 300mm equvalent. Please help me, and thank you. Blueruner@aol.com

I ve bought the fantastic Nikon Coolpix 950. I have it since the 7th may and i am completely satisfy and more with it. For your question, i think that this digital camera is the best for the moment. Optical zoom X3 (38-115mm equivalent) and there is a tele X2, that means a tele 230mm. It s not exactly 300 but not so far.. But if you want to put 20000$ instead of around 1200$, you have the professionnal digital camera eos2000 i think (without the accessories)..but the quality is not better (2millions instead of 2,11millions for the coolpix !)
