Get real! When there is chaos in the land, nobody will go on cruises! During chaos, all people can think of is filling their bellies!

Ah, yes, but most DGI's who are planning and who still go on cruises as late as the end of December will be marooned and THEN begin to realize the problem with filling their bellies.

As someone residing in an area which may be faced with dealing with/taking care of 30,000 extra mouths to feed (tourists booked in hotels here currently), I am very concerned about this segment of the population.

And how about the pilgrims in Rome for the Vatican celebration? Italy barely has a Y2K plan, certainly not an adequate one, according to their own committee members.

Many thanks for the replies. With incredibly bad timing we shall be opening a tourist attraction in the Caribbean this Autumn..hence my question relating to cruise bookings.

The shipping lines appear to be bringing more & more floating hotels on line..without any thought to the consequences of a recession/depression.Are they blissfully innocent?

Sara, you have a point about stranded passengers. Now that makes a few wheels turn!

Ps.Did you know that they try to get you to part with 95% of your spendig money onboard ship ?

My parents informed me that they are planning a cruise a month or so into the new year. It should be ok...they'll know whether air travel is happening and whether the cruise line is running...and the cruise line should know whether or not they'll have fuel, food, etc. IF it isn't all that bad...

If it is, then there should be enough indications.

Actually, I'd prefer that tourism stays up, since my home island (Kaua'i) does rely mainly on tourism...
