Navy to Use Smart Cards

This was pretty much what we had discussed before but had an interesting little informational sentence in the last paragraph: Navy preps intranet, smart cards BY BOB BREWIN (antenna@fcw.com) Norfolk, Va. -- The Navy continues to evaluate the costs for its global intranet with an eye toward kicking off contracting this summer and also has decided to use smart card technology as a "cyber-identity" for allowing entry into buildings and secure networks, according to speakers here at the service's semiannual Connecting Technology Conference last week.

SNIP

David Wennegren, deputy Navy CIO, said he viewed the smart card as a "multipurpose cyber-identity" with uses ranging from a PKI "hardware token" to a building pass key to a personnel ID.

Wennegren also does not envision the Navy loading the smart card with a lot of data, such as a service member's medical records, as contemplated in the past.

Rather, he sees it as a key to unlock access to such data on secure World Wide Web sites. Wennegren said the Navy will outfit the tens of thousands of personnel in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets this years.

Excellent post, however, the link would not let me there, overloaded it said. But My hubby and I were stationed in Norfolk, he got out in 95. Before he was discharged, they had issued new ID cards with magnetic strips on the back....hmmmmm...wonder if they will be the same ones. We often wondered what info would be loaded onto the strip.

Only way to failsafe these cards is to embed the holder's retinal pattern(s) on the card and instal retinal scanners at each point of use.

Don't hold your breath waiting for this to happen.

By 2030 (supposing things work out reasonably well next year) DNA matches will be the key of choice instead....

Yup Tom but Moan-ica's dress pre-empted the Navy by 31 years :)
