For that matter, Site-C DragonRanch is only about an hour and a half from DeeCee,  It's a beautiful place, fruit trees, rolling hills, almost Eden-like.

If you think that whatever happens will erupt so quickly that you won't have time to react, won't have time to hop into the Studebaker Golden Hawk and fire up the R2 Paxton engine, well, it would be wise to fall back prophyllacticly.

However, if you are confident that you can sense that something's happening, you might be willing to continue cranking before pulling out.

Code cranking, that is.

Is the scenario that when the big hand and the little hand point up and the Coo-coo pops out, a spontaneous riot breaks out, -bang- -bang-, loot him, he's got the eel!

Or will it take a few weeks or months even.  One month the AFDC checks are late so they hand out preprinted "pay to cash" checks for $200, the next month, there are 5 times as many hands sticking out and some are coming back 8 and 9 times because they know that no one is reconciling welfare payments.

Month two, the hospital workers go on strike because they haven't been paid.

Month three, the gas station down the street is looted and burned by enraged periodontists and podiatrists.

That's when I pour the last 5 gallons of unleaded into the cory-mobile and head for DragonRanch.    The flames of Atlanta light up the night sky, Reytt, Reytt, you've come for me.  Get the horse!  The flames creep toward the gunpowder on the siding.  As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again.

More likely, things unravel.  We stand around the ole neighborhood wondering what the H*** is going on.  Things get worse, the mail stops coming.  Finally, I say to the retiree next door, here's the key to the house.  Ya got a gun?  No?  Here's a target pistol and a brick of .22, You put the clip in like this and chamber a round by pulling on this. Click up and you can't pull the trigger. Click down and -bang-.  There's 100 lbs of rice and some other stuff I can't fit in the car. Good luck old timer, I'm heading out west to see if things are any better there.

Ah, ya beat me to it. Thoroughly enjoyed that post in c.s.y2k.

"Things unravel." The edges fray and the warp and woof of the fabric of society slowly, very slowly, comes apart. Entropy...

I'll bet you two are great fun at a party.....(oozing with sarcasm).

Actually, according to most reports, I am! Can talk to practically anyone about practically anything, and love to talk with someone who really understands a topic and can discuss it with passion. Even more fun when they're a subject matter expert - then I get to listen and learn.

Does Cory's ability to envision a possible negative scenario and describe it with brevity and wit bother you? I frankly appreciate and enjoy it. Given certain assumptions, I agree with the scenario, but I don't brood about it. IF (big ol' honkin' IF) enough major systems fail, this "slow-motion breakdown" seems to be a most likely result.

And by the way, here's a mop. I want that sarcasm cleaned up right now, mister! 8-}]

I am very good at pin-the-tail on the donkey, is that what you mean?

a@a.a:

""Almost everyone who has studied the problem admits that it really is a problem. But saying that it's a problem is too vague. It tends to lull people into a sense of complacency. "A problem" doesn't sound too bad. Whenever anyone dismisses the Year 2000 issue as merely "a problem" -- just one among many -- beware.""
