z'60 MINS' PLANNING NEW Y2K SCARE STORY; WATER, ELECTRICITY MAY BE CUT, SAYS MAG

Y2chaos on CBS-TV this weekend! Despite the billions being spent to deal with the Y2K computer bug, many cities in America are uncertain they'll be able to continue to provide basic services like water and electricity on Jan. 1, 2000, reports 60 MINUTES in a new shock story being readied for Sunday.

CBS' Steve Kroft is putting the finishing touches on his controversial report, according to network sources.

Mary Ellen Hanley, a computer systems specialist hired by the District of Columbia, tells wide-eyed Kroft that she believes Washington will continue to function on Jan. 1, 2000, but it must be prepared for what many cities could face.

"We think there will be some disruptions... localized in many cases if the supply chain works," Hanley tells the cameras.

"If power works, if gas works, if Bell Atlantic works... all of those are big ifs."

Hanley explains to Kroft that contingency programs, such as centers where city workers would manually verify taxes or write welfare checks, are being planned by her office. And even though she believes the city's water system can run without computers, rationing could be necessary if a power outage for as long as a week or two -- slows down water distribution.

Sen. Robert Bennet, R-Utah, who chairs a special Y2K Technology, scares the stopwatch and explains: "If, for example, there is a municipality that is unable to distribute welfare checks, there could be some civil unrest that could come out of that. If, if there was a disruption in the food supply, and food didn't get in, in a distributive kind of way. That it was concentrated in one part of the city but not in another, that could be a situation that could create some civil unrest."

Tick, Tick, T. . .

helium,

Thanks for the info. Another thread about this Sunday's 60 Minutes is at:

"60 min. y2k"

-- Kevin (mixesmusic@worldnet.att.net), May 20, 1999.

Did Ms. Hanley happen to explain how political appointees would be trained to manage complex water systems manually, considering that skilled employees at the Bureau of Printing did not know where the Grand Canyon is located? Coming from the same area, I assume they are all products of the same public school system. And all equal.

-- A. Hambley (a.hambley@usa.net), May 21, 1999.

Hee haa haa, yup, I hear ya! Everybody knows the Grand Canyon is in Colorado, don't they?

I know, I'm really bad, but I can't resist...

Polly want a cracker...??? <:)=

Oh! Oh! Matt Drudge! God has come down to earth!

Grow up. And get a better hat.

While we're on the subject: a better show than 60 Minutes (Dateline NBC, as measured by the whatever-award-they-touted-they-got on their show Tuesday night) has been known to manufacture results (remember the bottle rockets mounted under the truck gas tanks, resulting in explosions?)

This is trusted journalism in America, folks.

-- Chicken Little (panic@forthebirds.net), May 21, 1999.

Good morning Chicken,

Gee, maybe somebody read the whole Senate report. You do remember HTML Senate Reort on Y2K with bookmarks don't you? Ever even look at the headlines? Would you consider this "trusted journalism in America," Chicken? <:)=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), May 21, 1999.

Oh, I'm sorry Chicken, this is OLD NEWS. Silly me... <:)=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), May 21, 1999.

Absoputerly, Sys.

I read that Senate report yesterday.

Do you have a point? Worth mentioning, that is.

-- Chicken Little (panic@forthebirds.net), May 21, 1999.

Chicken Little,

You really should get back in the 'coupe'... before you're eaten alive!

-- BadDog (cujo@baddog.com), May 21, 1999.

Well Chicken,

Since Mr. Yourdon will be before the Senate, next Monday I believe, I guess it ain't old news yet. And yea, funny that 60 minutes should pick this weekend, isn't it? And that latest NERC report, you know, the one that shows a 75% average (don't even get me started on that...)? Funny how all this Y2K stuff just keeps showing up here, isn't it? I really do feel sorry for you if you just read the Senate report yesterday. You could have been a few months ahead...

And, do you have a point there, turk... err, Chicken??? <:)=

PS - If so, I'll get it later, sack time...

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), May 21, 1999.

And that ain't my hat, it's my hair! <<<:)=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), May 21, 1999.

What's funny is how you folks pick and choose which media outlets to give credence to. Sixty Minutes going doomer? YEAH! The media's KEWL!

The other 98% of the media puts Y2k on a level with the heartbreak of psoriasis? OH THE MEDIA'S BOGUS!

Ordinarily I'd suggest that you folks make up your minds; but I already realize that's not possible. You go with whatever fits your agenda: not necessarily with what's TRUE.

-- Chicken Little (panic@forthebirds.net), May 21, 1999.

Sys, just caught that comment.

I'd hoped you'd give me a little more credit than that. Don't ya know sarcasm when ya see it man? Read it when it hit the web. Within a few hours, anyway. You knew that.

-- Chicken Little (panic@forthebirds.net), May 21, 1999.

Chicken,

I really am going to bed! Yes, I do pick and choose what I believe. I have a full T1 line at work, with a DS3 hub 500 feet away, and I can hit a web site faster than you can blink. I am very serious about this issue. So is my boss, the one that lets me do Y2K research. See some of my past posts if you really want to know why. Let's just say that my company is at direct risk due to Y2K. I may start fights here, and make fun of people on this forun, but Y2K is one of my biggest professional and private concerns. I ain't happy with what I see, right now, today. Good night. <:)=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), May 21, 1999.

Starting to enjoy arguing with ya, Sys.

Can't say that for Andy, tho LMAO (where is he? ROWF)

-- Chicken Little (panic@forthebirds.net), May 21, 1999.

And Bob Stack at Unsolved Mysteries this coming week is doing Y2K also.

Gee...bunches of shows doing Y2K stories in May

Can anyone say "sweeps month"? I knew you could

-- gulliable bastards (ohboy@doom.com), May 21, 1999.

Let me say this, friends, 60 Minutes is hard-wired into American culture. People watch it, and take it seriously. If the program has a hard negative take on Y2K, I suggest you'll be reading "fallout" articles within a week. Just a thought.

Regards,

-- Mr. Decker (kcdecker@worldnet.att.net), May 21, 1999.

And if I'm not mistaken, Horn's grades are due any day now.

Betting on Monday...might be an interesting week.

-- Roland (nottelling@nowhere.com), May 21, 1999.

Why do you guys even bother with people like Chicken Little. You could rub shit in his face and he would tell you it's a rose.

Give it up.

-- Watcher (Alert@IpayAttention.com), May 21, 1999.

Chicdick; How can you make a judgement on a show that has not been on the air yet? Talk about minds made up?!?!

-- FLAME AWAY (BLehman202@aol.com), May 21, 1999.

I agree that Decker is right, and I'm a GI. It doesn't matter if 60 minutes tells the truth about y2k or lies from start to finish. Their huge influence on public opinion is what counts. This is the program that tells pseudointellectual establishment lackeys what to believe, and whom to deride.

-- DMH (aint@tellin.com), May 21, 1999.

A short blurb on the story is now up on cbs.com

http://www.cbs.com/flat/section_3415.html

Despite the billions being spent to deal with the Y2K computer bug, many municipalities can't guarantee their citizens basic services like water and electricity on January 1, 2000. Steve Kroft reports. Frank Devine is the producer.

-- Buddy (.@...), May 21, 1999.

I go away for a few days and return to find that we have another Jimmy Bagga Chickenshit. Ho hum.

-- Pearlie Sweetcake (storestuff@home.now), May 21, 1999.

Chicken - the mainstream media has whitewashed all aspects of reporting since this administration has come to power.

Yes - Drudge now is more credible than NBC, CBS, ABC, and CNN. They aren't reporting facts anymore.

-- Robert A. Cook, PE (Kennesaw, GA) (cook.r@csaatl.com), May 21, 1999.

LOL, Pearlie.

Never thought I'd type this, but for once Decker, I agree with you.

The power of 60-minutes to impact a middle America perspective on Y2K, is probably right up there with the Simpsons.

Last fall, talked about Y2K till I was exhausted, it took the 60- minutes Thankgiving time-frame show, for people to start asking me serious questions and start preparing.

Sound's like they are all grearing up for Tuesday's Seante Hearing.

Could be a VERY interesting week.

Diane,

I think your credibility is still intact. You can always claim it was simply a matter of time (and the laws of probability).
