Just back from Egypt, and Shel Silverstein is dead!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I just got back from a vacation in Egypt to discover that Shel Silverstein is dead. (sniff sniff)I got the name Pearlie Sweetcake from one of his songs. Anyway, I hardly thought about Y2K at all while I was there, but while purchasing souvenirs I bought myself a nice alabaster morter and pestle. Decorative and potentially functional. It did occur to me that the lives of most poverty-stricken Egyptians will probably not change much after 1-1-2000. The ones dependent on tourism will be hurting, though. I'll bet my life changes much more than theirs does. We didn't discuss Y2K with most of our tour-mates, but one guy did admit that he is preparing. Slowly, slowly, we are finding other GIs besides the ones on the internet.

Pearlie

We should remind the folks that Shel was the writer of most Dr Hook songs, Sloppy Seconds is one of my faves. Now back to our usual programming.

Where do you get those wind up phonographs.

Didn't he also write those childrens books, like "Where the Sidewalk Ends?"

Pearlie, Bryan, Anita

Yes, Shel Silverstein did write those wonderful children's books: A Light in the Attic, Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Missing Piece, and The Giving Tree. Not as well known as Dr. Seuss but equally praiseworthy. My sons loved his books. He'll be missed.

Brian,

I saw a hand-wind phonograph on one of the television shopping shows, either Home Shopping Network or QVC. Good Luck finding one!
