Why Maria is an ignoramus

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

This gem from another thread needed to be re-posted, for the benefit of those who are being dissuaded from preparing by the pollyannas:

Maria (anon@ymous.com) said:

Russia is already toast, they are already at the bottom, Y2K will have little impact to their operations.

Doug (douglasjohnson@prodigy.net) said:

That is nonsense. A major nuclear power without a functional early warning system. A nation of millions of people probably without power in the middle of a Russian winter. A major exporter of natural gas to Western Europe. A major exporter of crude oil.

Business as usual? Little impact? Wake up.

Maria you are a fool.

I would maintain that anyone who calls anyone else a "fool" is in danger of being branded with something much worse. A very wise man said as much -- see Matt. 5:22

-- Matt. 5:22 (NewTestament@Bible.net), May 18, 1999.

Turn the other cheek, Matt. Calling someone a fool and an ignoramus is actualy a step *toward* civil discourse on 'a's part. Usually, the best he can do is cross-post Milne's rants, so he's improving.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), May 18, 1999.

Besides, 'a' quotes a very wise fellow! ;)

-- Doug (douglasjohnson@prodigy.net), May 18, 1999.

And HOW does this further a reasoned discourse? Yeah the attitude adjustment took.

Doug, I was going to answer you on the other thread but since a has so graciously started this one, I thought I'd keep it going. I know that a must have some relatives there because she keeps on going back to the topic on Russia. Anyway...

Russia had a million people without heat this winter. So you think Y2K will have an effect on this. When you're without heat, you're without heat. Did you happen to notice the reports on food shortages they have now? People haven't been paid in months. Let's see, no heat, no food, no money. Hmmmmm. No amount of Y2K problems can make it much worse than that. Do you think?

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), May 18, 1999.

Doug, sorry I forgot you also mentioned the nuke stuff. We are working with the Russian military to share info on that fateful day. I really don't believe (unlike Nik and Andy) that Russia will send off their nukes on 1/1/00 because of a computer glitch.

A, why do you repeat yourself or others (such as Doug on this thread) and never have an original thought?

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), May 18, 1999.

Well, now that you mention it, if they can't ship their oil, what little income Russia has now may disappear, and a couple of Chernobyl type meltdowns could make things even worse.

-- Clyde (clydeblalock@hotmail.com), May 18, 1999.

Maria commented:

"Russia had a million people without heat this winter. So you think Y2K will have an effect on this. When you're without heat, you're without heat."

Let's see Maria, if the nuke plants shut down maybe 20 million people will be without heat, who knows maybe 40 million. Yes Maria, y2k has the potential to devastate Russia.

Your Pal, Ray

-- Ray (ray@totacc.com), May 18, 1999.

Maria

I guess you didn't hear that Russia called off the Y2K collaboration after we started bombing Belgrade. Not that it would have mattered. No intelligent polly would argue that Russia could complete a Y2K remediation plan in less than a year, anyway.

I don't think I've heard that missile launches were a likely result of Russian Y2K problems. But, it is a problem if their missile launch detection system goes blind, which reports indicate. You can't argue that it would help stabalize the world, especially given our foreign antics.

As far as Russia losing power or heat, it does make a big difference. Yes, certainly, many parts of Russia are primitive, but Moscow is not, and it is the center of government. Additionally, there are numerous nuclear power plants of Chernobyl vintage, and it seems to me that without remediation, it is a question of whether they can safely power down--not whether they can continue to safely operate.

-- Doug (douglasjohnson@prodigy.net), May 18, 1999.

Aw, I wouldn't say Maria is an ignoramus, a. True, she slipped when she told Old Git she was tired of typing Troll AND Maria. Why? Well, as smart as she is she can read the instructions on how to set a persistent cookie. Only reason you don't set your cookie is because you post here under different names. You been trolling under different names, Troll Maria? Naughty, naughty -- isn't that what you guys accuse US of doing? Part of the takeover bid, no doubt. Huh? Yeah, takeover bid. Lookee here, there's Deano, Jonathan Latimer, Cherri, Maria, Morgan and good old Doc Paulie (who's neither a doctor nor a Paulie).

Have heard quite a bit about this place and now I see the time is limited. Bummer. Name's Deano, Y2K project manager at a Fortune 500 company that has completed everything. Even made the 12/31/1998 deadline. Spend quite a bit of time arguing with the doomers over at yourdonefors place. They're not too fond of ol' Deano over there but I have a little fun with'em anyway. Never was one to warm up to a raving lunatic anyhow.

Just wanted to let yall know that there are plenty involved in the game that really and truly 'get it' (to use one of their phrases).

Deano

Hello Deano - Date: Apr 08, 01:28

For what it is worth, welcome. The more the merrier, though it has been scarce since the announcemnt went up on the 15th. However, whatever posts you can make before then would be appreciated.

Keep smiling,

Jonathan

I did......just hard to find the time.... - Date: Apr 09, 08:28 Cherri

Nice to see a familiar face! I had heard about it but never really had the time to check it out. With testing winding down and all, results being distributed, things are a bit more laid back now. Actually have some time to surf a little. Made it over here and kicked myself for not showing up sooner. A lot of those folks at Eddie's tend to rub me the wrong way. We certainly have different views on life. I prefer to enjoy mine as much as possible. You seem the same. Funny how optimism can do that to a person.

I'm really looking forward to the rollover and subsequent non-event. I will have to laugh. They keep saying they won't have to grocery shop for a year. How fucking long can a person eat beans and rice?!? Especially if LongHorns is serving ribeye's and t-bones right down the street! I'm not even sure they realize how long it takes to cook dried beans. What, 6-8 hours?? How much fuel will that burn for a friggin' pot of beans??

Enough ramblin' for now.......see ya Maria and thanks!

Deano

Now, now Cherri, you know how the good folks at EY..... - Date: Apr 09, 08:25

.... get their knickers all in a bunch when there's a sudden influx of 'pollys'. Upsets their vision, y'know.

Morgan

Thanks dude! A little background for yall..... - Date: Apr 08, 07:56

Thanks! Nice to feel welcome.

I've been involved in this thing for well over a year now. Work for a mortgage banking service bureau that provides loan servicing software to (roughly) 150 mortgage companies/banks across the country. 20 million+ single-family mortgages are processed on our mainframe in Jax, FL. It's a fairly huge operation. We started our Y2K project in 1994 and finished last year. Mainly external testing this year.

Anyway, thought yall would like to see an F500 company that's come out and said we're done, bring it on! By the way, it's [DELETED BY OUTINGSR].

Feel free - Date: Apr 09, 00:06

to come over to a little alternative to this forum. Debunking Y2k webboard

You'll find me there, I am the Moron and Jackass who's current deal is asking if Y2k is indeed the scam and hoax prior tarred and feathered ones like the Reader's Digest head and Nicholas Zvegintzov said years ago. You will also find many from here, there etc.

OutingsR, Your point? If it's that you can copy and paste, congratulations!

Doug stated, "I guess you didn't hear that Russia called off the Y2K collaboration after we started bombing Belgrade. Not that it would have mattered. No intelligent polly would argue that Russia could complete a Y2K remediation plan in less than a year, anyway." I guess you didn't hear we're continuing to build to joint center. It has nothing to do with the Russia remediation but a collocated center with Russians and us sitting side by side in an effort to avoid the "blind" detection systems. They see what we see; they know what we know.

How much do you know about nuke power plants and Russia's remediation efforts? Can anyone say what will happen or is this, once again, just lots of speculation?

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), May 19, 1999.

Um, pardon my ignorance. Don't the Russians need electric to fire off ground to air missles? Or are we assuming only air deployment?

-- Gia (Laureltree7@hotmail.com), May 19, 1999.

I think they work on D cells.

-- a (a@a.a), May 19, 1999.

Actually, you're both wrong... Russian nuclear missiles are launched by giant Acme rubber bands.

-- Morgan (morgan96@netscape.net), May 19, 1999.

Morgan - LOL - good luck on your ME contract, if you're on the net out there do drop in and let us know how they are coping - particularly interested in oil - wellheads, pipelines, refineries, shipping, desalinisation plants etc.

Cheers,

Well, you guessed wrong. But, here's a homework assignment. Report back to the group what the official anticipated completion date of the facility is.

Ol' Morgan's in there too, and Jonathan. Who knows who else is involved? See the full paste a few posts back in this thread.

Thanks to OutingsR for doing more to spread CMFR {calm mongering fear rejectionism} than all the pollytrolls combined. Too many people would never read an optimistic view of y2k; you bring it to the doorstep. I know I'm down from a '7' to about a '4' now, thanks to you. keep it up.

-- (used@to.bescared), May 19, 1999.

Andy, will do. Although I don't work directly in Oil and Gas, the company I will be managing is a vendor to some big players in the industry. In the UAE, we're online through a proxy server, courtesy of the local telco, Etisalat.

Outings, what exactly is your point? I've been posting to the GNBFI forum since around posts #64 or 65. Wow, big secret. You're welcome to cut and paste any of my stuff. As for my post quoted above, read it again carefully... and make sure you mouth all the words, one by one. It says (here, I'll type slowly), that the good folks here get all riled up when there's a sudden influx of 'pollys'.... what, you don't think so?

-- Morgan (morgan96@netscape.net), May 19, 1999.

I don't think Maria is an ignoramus. But for heaven's sake, someone give her a saucer of milk.

-- Dian (bdp@accessunited.com), May 19, 1999.

Can you put some kaluha in it?

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), May 19, 1999.

Maria--

Time's up. You get a bad grade, and no saucer of milk. In December, the Dept of Defense stated that they hoped to get the joint manning station operational in late 1999, but that it might be sometime in 2000.

Any guesses whether the timetable has improved since then?

Never mind. Russia doesn't matter, I know.

-- Doug (douglasjohnson@prodigy.net), May 19, 1999.

Absolutely not. You might lose all inhibitions!

-- Dian (bdp@accessunited.com), May 19, 1999.

Doug, sorry no links. I talked to the military officer in charge of the project. I've seen the facility. I didn't know this was a timed event! I didn't ask when it would be finished but you wouldn't believe me if I typed in those words so what does it matter. Personally, I think it's a stupid idea.

Dian, what's your background, sassy remarks? No I don't have any inhibitions. My boss doesn't fear that I'll hold back my opinions however I do phrase them differently than on this forum.
