From Dick Mills' Powerful Prognostications. . .

"Comparing Real Life with Predictions" (selected excerpts)

Despite being deemed ready for online use, the new software has lots of problems. My position on this has been that when things are declared 100% ready and 100% tested, they have found about 85% of the bugs. In the coming months, you're going to hear hundreds of declarations that "We are totally confident that we are 100% ready." Keep this in mind.

I guess that none of the billing errors were in the zillion dollar range, and nobody froze to death because their power was cut off. If those this (sic) had happened, there would have be (sic), more publicity earlier. These risks have been greatly exaggerated in the Y2K literature.

This Y2K problem occurred in 1999, not midnight 2000-01-01.

The problem occurred in isolation. Next year, there will be many more similar problems simultaneously. If this problem alone can jamb the customer service lines, then it should be much worse next year. Multiple simultaneous problems have a compound effect worse than the sum of the parts. While not life or safety threatening, widespread bookkeeping errors could disrupt business as usual much more than many businessmen expect.

Try comparing these real life experiences with the prognostications of your favorite prognosticators. I think you'll find that neither optimist nor pessimist views are supported.

Sandy,

I'm certainly interested, and I am aware of the meeting.

I'd dearly love to meet all the "Yourdonites" who manage to make it but unfortunately it's not in the cards.
