Marianne, I got sidetracked looking at the "Y2K Problems Identified" section at:

http://www.iaea.org/cgi-bin/nsni-jmr-y2kperl1.pl?CC=PRO

Hungary has been exceptionally forthcoming with the chart they provided. The chart does not involve I&C Safety Systems as the old system was based on relay logic and they have no indication that the new digital system refurbishment project now underway has any Y2K "sensitivities". They do list two "critical faults" in data acquisition which need to be replaced and some "partial" faults in the In-Core monitoring system, Safety-Related systems, and Communications, with analysis continuing in other areas.

Thanks for providing the link! I'm going to finish reading the rest now.

Starting timelines are generally presented according to when either the government or nuclear regulatory agency of said country first initiated either a guidance letter or directive to investigate the Y2K problem (as in start a Year 2000 project). According to the information provided in answer to the international questionnaire sent out, those awareness starting dates are:

Bulgaria - Sept. 1998

Canada - no formal start date given

Czech Republic - 1/2/1999 (some utility awareness in 1997)

Finland - 3/31/1998

Germany - 16 July 1998

Hungary - utilities, first half of 1998 (no govt. guidance document)

India - 1998

Indonesia - 1998

Japan - Sept. 11, 1998

Mexico - March 23, 1998

Netherlands - Jan. 1998

Pakistan - Sept. 1998

Spain - May, 1998 (letter issued requiring the set up of a plan to make the facilities year 2000 ready)

Ukraine - 17 Aug. 1998 and Guidance document of Dec. 1998 accepted as basis for further activities.

UK - utilities, 1996/97, formal action mid 1997

U.S. - Oct. 1997 NRC Guidance document sent

Bonnie,

I believe most of the really big utilities in Canada started in 1996/97.
