Jiang, Yeltsin Discuss NATO Attack on Phone BEIJING, May 10 -- Russian President Boris Yeltsin called Chinese President Jiang Zemin through hotline this noon to express his utmost indignation over the U.S.-led NATO's barbarous act of attacking on the Chinese embassy in Belgrade.

Yeltsin said that as soon as he was informed of the news, he issued a statement at once to express his strongest condemnation.

The stance of Russia is totally the same as that of China on this issue, he said.

Yeltsin also condemned NATO's air strikes against Yugoslavia, a sovereign state, by ignoring the role of the United Nations. He appealed NATO to halt the bombing immediately, and returned to the negotiation table to seek a solution for the Kosovo problem.

Only when NATO halts its air strikes, will a political solution of the problem become possible, he added.

Jiang said that the U.S.-led NATO's attack on Chinese Embassy is an utmost barbarous act, and a gross violation of Chinese sovereignty, which is rare in the diplomatic history.

"U.S.-led NATO should bear all the responsibilities arising therefrom," he told Yeltsin.

Jiang pointed out that the military attack of the U.S.-led NATO against Yugoslavia, a sovereign state, by bypassing the United Nations, is the demonstration of an "absolute gun-boat policy".

This is a very dangerous trend, which should arouse the vigilance of statesmen all over the world, he noted.

Jiang went on to say that China and Russia, two permanent members of the UN Security Council and two countries playing an important role in the world, shoulder significant responsibility on upholding justice and maintaining peace.

At present, the halting of NATO's attack against Yugoslavia constitutes the prerequisite of the solving of the Kosovo crisis, he said.

With the bombing continuing, it is impossible for the UN Security Council to discuss any plan to solve the problem, and any plan to be made should be acceptable to Yugoslavia, Jiang noted.

He told his Russian counterpart that the two countries have conducted sound cooperation in major international issues including that of Kosovo, and he suggested that the two countries maintain close consultation and further coordination.

Mr.K,,

Thanks for the china links. Are you looking at russia too? Yeltsin fires Premokov....

Wright, I do follow Russia, but they are more encumbered and less likely to be in a position to move on the US in any type of retaliation than China. It is important to follow both, now, though, since they seem to be "teaming up"!!!!

Think we'll have a trade war, anyone?

I'd say their first and best shot at us (America) and other NATO allies is through cyber-terrorism (of which has already reared its ugly head) and financial upheaval. Common', if the WHITE HOUSE is so clearly vunerable to hacking, ....welll,... BANKS, YOU'D BETTER WATCH OUT!
