Real Life y2k disruption

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I am new to this site, but have been following this problem for several years. I thought I would relay a personal y2k experience that was revealing. I was at a 1200-room hotel that had recently completed remediation of their computer system and brought it up two days earlier. The day I arrived the damned thing absolutely blank-screened itself. They had no idea who was in the hotel, who had checked out, which rooms were occupied, etc., etc. Guys with walkie-talkies ran from room to room looking for empty rooms to put guests into. Checkin went from your usual five minutes to 3+ hours. This was impressive foreshadowing of things to come.

PS-If my brother and sister-in-law are reading this and recognize this story, I just want to say Hi to them (EHC & CC).

PS-I hope I don't get the crap spammed out of me for posting this story.

I DON'T BELIEVE THIS STUFF ANYMORE.

SOUNDS LIKE ANOTHER.... "LETS BLAME Y2K FOR THIS INSTEAD OF THE "COMPUTERS" THIS TIME".

IF THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM INSTEAD OF A "DISRUPTION" CAN YOU LIVE WITH THIS??

DOES THIS LOCATION HAVE A TV STATION OR NEWSPAPER OR RADIO TO "WHISTLE BLOW"..... OR IS THAT TOOOOO MUCH TROUBLE FOR YOU??

GOT "CITY"??

GOT "SYSTEM NAME"??

GOT EVEN A "STATE"??

Dave:

No reason to worry about being slammed for reporting a story (unless it is a positive story, then worry...)

The very same thing happened to me on a business trip to Vancouver three summers ago - computers and the people who build and install them are not infallable, and they're not all Y2K related. Stuff happens...

Thanks for the post - sorry for the teeny-tiny-weenie-whiney club that insists on spamming you and others in an attempt drown out free- thinking contributors with opinions other than theirs.

Sounds like some of the "new" and/or "upgraded" systems aren't going to work without testing and fixing along the way. I am glad that these situations are happening now. I worry about all the ones (like the company I worked for until recently) who are still shopping for new systems, will get them late and then be struggling come Y2K to function while computers are being worked on. We simply do not know how many other companies like that there are.

Thanks again!

The problems in a newly installed system, whatever their specifics, are Y2K related if the reason the new system was installed was to replace, rather than repair, a system with Y2K bugs.
