I guess that I am somewhat clueless. Can someone tell me what Video CDs are? Or are they just videos?

I too have never heard of this format and remain completely in the dark as to the contents of the cd even after entering the above site. (Something the good people at videocd.com just might want to correct.)

Video CD is Mpeg 1 Movies on CD, you can using xing from www.xingtech.com or Microsoft Media Player (free) to play http://www.microsoft.com/windows/mediaplayer/download/default.asp

Basically, Video CD is a poor cousin to DVD. It never really caught-on in North America, but in Asia (the other side of the Pacific Rim) it is a popular format. As with VHS video tapes, there are authorized copies of movies, and totally pirated blackmarket copies.

More infomation (probably more than most would care to know about):

The DVD specification also specifies the option for multiple layers of data foil on a single disc. DVD players also use a higher-frequency (shorter wavelength) laser beam; hence, the data on the disc surface can be more compact.

{revised through-out for both grammar and content}

Oh, and Video CD's do not need a computer for playback: there are also dedicated players which hook-up to a TV set just like a VCR. Again, most players are on the other side of the Pacific Ocean (if you're in North America).

There's a Q&A forum here on Greenspun dedicated to Video CD's.
