NW coastline, near sunset

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

Taken last week while waiting for sunset. I took a whole roll while the clouds lasted. We don't usually get conditions this nice. Either the fog and horizontal rain has everything socked in or the sky is a boring blue. Bit fortunately we don't often have a problem with boring blue skies. So far this year I can count blue sky days on one hand, I think... Velvia, f22 and be there. I think the exposure was like 1/4 second or so. Keith

Keith, I would like to know your secret to get so beautifull photo with so hard conditions ...

Thanks Charles!

No secret. Just being there at the right time was the biggest challenge. Days like that don't come along very often. Especially this year. I was lucky to have the afternoon off that day, and to have an asignment that took me to within a few miles of that spot to begin with.

All in all, I waited about an hour and a half for about 5 minutes of shooting...perched out literally on the edge of the cliff, using exposed tree roots to sit on while I waited.

Metering was very straight forward. I used a normal centerweighted meter (set to ISO 40) and bracketed 1/2 stop either side, since the light was relatively even and soft. Clouds were drifting in front of the sun, so I would wait until a soft hazy one that let most of the sunlight through came along. The rest of the time the light was too flat to be interesting. There was a brief time when there were no clouds, but I trashed those slides because they were boring.

The other challenge of course, is getting a good scan. Nikon LS-2000, color management turned OFF, the three gamma curges adjusted manually, independently of each other, with a very small final correction in Photoshop 5.02 (Adobe RGB colorspace).

Cheers,

Keith

Just a really beautiful landscape shot. Clouds are just right. Colors look a little unreal but very attractive.

Beautiful picture. You might think about cropping the bottom a little to just above the shadow. Keep the little spit of land going out into the water. I think this will move the eye toward the more complex imagery of the waves, rather than hunting around in the shadow and still waters.

That's a very good observation and I appreciate you mentioning it.

Actually, I did take some that way, but prefered this version. "Compositional bracketing" ;>

When I framed an 8x10 print, the matt covered enough of the bottom shadow so that it wasn't so noticiable. In the tighter cropped shots I had less flexibility when framing... I tend to purposely shoot many frames looser to allow for cropping to standard proportions and matting.

By the way, if anyone knows where to get truly custom and artistic framing done, at near wholesale prices, PLEASE let me know. The best place I've found so far is in the Spokane mall, but it's an 8 hour drive for me, and they don't beleive in having a web site with online ordering. :<

Cheers,

Keith
