Can the canon 1.4x be used with the canon 400 4.5?

According to what I remember (not 100% sure) it can be used with any lens 300mm or longer. As you know it is mechanically such that the front element(s) of the extender goes inside the lens (maybe 10mm or so) so don't try to use it with e.g. the 85/1.8... VP

The FD 400 mm f/4.5 (new FD mount, not the previous SSC version) can be used with the FD 1.4X-A extender.

The rear baffle on earlier 400 f/4.5's can be machined by a good repair shopt to accept the 1.4x converter. I had mine done at Comet Camera Repair in Philadelphia

Yes, they can be used together. I have been using this very combination for the last few months with good results. Be sure to set the whole works on a good tripod. Use a remote shutter release and you're in business. Good shooting!

My posting is for those that may look this up in the future. Several years ago I bought a 1.4X-A not realizing it would not fit into my 400mm f4.5 SSC. A short telephone conversation with a Canon technician gave me the confidence to plunge ahead. I removed the mount from the 400mm and very crudely cut and filed the excess metal away, dabbed the silver edges with black paint and it has functioned perfectly ever since. I have been very pleased with the lens/converter combination!
