Why is manipulating scanner images slower than D.camera images?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

When I manipulate images from my digital camera I can do it well and fast. But if I use images from a scanner it takes along time and some times the computer tells me that there is not enogh memory. What is the difference between the two?I have 32 MB RAM thanks very much J.Lindley

You need more RAM.

Yup - ram is necessary. The reason is that the scanner is creating a much higher resolution image (i.e. a lot more pixels that the software has to manage - which takes more ram AND CPU power). Look at the size of the files. You'll find the file from your camera is smaller then the file your scanner puts out. The truth is - you probably don't need all the resolution your scanner is putting out (depending on the use). You can set the resolution on your scanner to something more appropriate (like 300 DPI) for a good quality, but manageable size picture.
