Anyone else noticed WalMart prices going up?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

When I first started storing my foods, I bought mostly at WalMart and when things were on sale. They had lots of sales last summer and fall. However, I still manage to get there once a week and have a regular "route" through the store checking prices and sales on items I use/store. In the last couple of months there have been no sales (other than coffee) on stapels, canned goods, pasta and sauces, etc. The end caps are full of sales of crackers, Pop Tarts and that sort of thing. Also the prices have gone up on a lot of stuff as much as 10% or more. I think we are already paying for WalMarts y2k remediation. Fortunately the local dollar store seems to be oblivious to y2k even tho cases of TP, tooth paste, hydrogen peroxide, etc is going out at a good clip. I am glad I started early as I feel the price will rise to the current level of anxiety as the year progresses. Supply and demand with a little panic thrown in.

My wife and I were just talking about this, back in 11/98 we could buy dried blackeye peas 3 for $1.00 now you are lucky to find them below 50 cents. Everything that has a long shelf seems to have gone up in price and not ever on sale. We've also noticed that when things do go on sale there is a limit to how many you can buy. I guess too many y2kers were buying to much sale stuff and they had to do something. Imagine what its gonna be like later in the year!

I noticed about a month ago, that the oil lamps had gone up a dollar since the end of December. At the time, they had more oil lamps that I had ever seen there before. They were end-caps, they were at the front of the store, everywhere. Now, I cannot find one, let alone any oil for them.

i've noticed too. i go about once a week to check the camping supplies; i've been buying 5-gallon collapsible water bags. we recently needed a wood pole and got it at Lows(sp?) instead for $3 less -- 1/3 less! i've also noticed that nothing useful has gone on sale for about 2 months.
