Upstart Web Design

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

As a web start up company, you can imagine I am strapped for cash. Almost all of my images are going to go on web pages that will hold jpeg and gif files. For optimization purposes you generally lower the colors or compress. I figure I don't need a very good digital camera for this purpose, but some guidance would be helpful.

Sincerely,

Thomas Grebis

As an amateur webmaster and photog (and just getting my feet wet with digital), I have to ask you what sort of pictures you will be taking, and how will they be used on your web site? Will you be able to get close enough to your subjects to make up for either low resolution or lack of zoom? What kind of lighting will be available?

The rest boils down to selecting GIF or JPG, deciding on the tradeoff between image quality and download time, and managing color palettes for the browsers.
