I second Benoit's recommendation for using a PCMCIA adapter to read the images into the Powerbook. The only wrinkle is that you'll need to have the PC Exchange control panel enabled on the Mac, so it will recognize the DOS directory structure of the memory cards.

We have a Epson 750Z digital camera and a Epson Photo 700 printer on our Mac 7600. They both work very well on the Mac. The camera comes with a cable to connect to the Mac serial port.

If you have a powerbook you should use a PCMCIA adaptor to transfer images. Fastest/easiest method. As for camera suggestion you didn't give enough details about your requirements to suggest one. :)
