Scanner and printer advice for novice

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I've finally become comfortable with Photoshop (5.02) and would like to invest in a negative scanner and printer. I have USB ports and intend to print 8x10's. What do I really need? What are the top brands? I would appreciate any advice or direction to good sources on these topics. Thanx.

Hi, There are some excellent reviews and reccomendations on the following web site devoted to digital photography techniques: http://come.to/digitaldarkroom In short, most folks there are professionals and prefer Epson printers to HP. For a scanner, most use either the Nikon LS-2000 or the HP Photosmart. The HP is lots cheaper but not quite as good. A superb buy though. Regards, Howard

I'll second Howard's comments on the scanners - We've reviewed a number, the HP does very well at the low end of the price range, the Nikon LS-2000 and Minolta Dimage Scan Speed at the high end are great. We're about to review HP's update of their unit, with USB interface in a few weeks (hopefully sooner than that, but I'm slowly learning how much longer everything takes than I think it should!)
