Y2K Wisdom from Phil Greenspun

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Well, it isn't really a quote directly from Phil, nor is it about Y2K prepping specifically, but other than that my thread title is pure truth-in-advertising. Tonikaku..., here goes, from the 'Denali' chapter of the book pointed to by the little photo trailers added to new threads these days:

Woody left me with a precious epiphany: "If you want more out of life, give up everything. If you want people to be your friend, give them everything you have. Give them your food, house, companionship, trust, love. When you start hoarding things, that is when the world turns against you."

That may be true, but...................about a year ago on some y2k forum someone said this, and I have never forgotten it.

"The lack of preparation on your part.......does not make an emergency on my part."

I'm with Taz on this one.

My culture survived in an extremely hostile environment by thinking ahead, storing against adversity, never eating next year's seed and relying on personal efforts. I believe there is an important difference betweeen the world turning TO you and the world turning AGAINST you. Since all I have to give is knowledge and I often cannot give that away, nor can anyone steal it from me I have nothing to fear from the world.

Anyway, all I fear is that I am not of the saintly persuasion...

With all due respect (and not meaning to offend anyone), the words of Christ mirror the original post. In my mind, it is a very strong endorsement.

Blue--I'm racking my brains, man--the Denali chapter...which book is it in? I've got a civil-war era browser and don't get scenery...was it Kipling? Melville? Stephen King? And surely, surely THIS forum is no place to introduce the concept of Total Abandonment to the Divine Will, as practiced by Saints, monks, anchorites and irenic-eyed nuns through the ages (Christian AND Buddhist).

Blue you screwball - you'll next be regaling us with anachronistic crap such as below from Tolstoy.... stay on topic feline

And the angel's body was bared, and he was clothed in light so that eye could not look on him; and his voice grew louder, as though it came not from him but from heaven above. And the angel said:

'I have learnt that all men live not by care for themselves, but by love.

'It was not given to the mother to know what her children needed for their life. Nor was it given to the rich man to know what he himself needed. Nor is it given to any man to know whether, when evening comes, he will need boots for his body or slippers for his corpse.

'I remained alive when I was a man, not by care of myself, but because love was present in a passer-by, and because he and his wife pitied and loved me. The orphans remained alive, not because of their mother's care, but because there was love in the heart of a woman a stranger to them, who pitied and loved them. And all men live not by the thought they spend on their own welfare, but because love exists in man.

'I knew before that God gave life to men and desires that they should live; now I understood more than that.

'I understood that God does not wish men to live apart, and therefore he does not reveal to them what each one needs for himself; but he wishes them to live united, and therefore reveals to each of them what is necessary for all.

'I have now understood that though it seems to men that they live by care for themselves, in truth it is love alone by which they live. He who has love, is in God, and God is in him, for God is love.'

when a christian poly tells you"y2k doesn't scare me,christ will provide" he means YOU will provide,a wood burning stove will be a banner reading "free food here"

-- zoobie (zoob@aol.com), April 23, 1999.

Well Zoobie, you make an interesting point, but the way I see it, a true Polly Christian will (a) NOT attack others if ts DOES htf; and (b) WILL be taken care of by non-Polly, prepared Christians. Birds of a feather and all, y'know ?
