Although I'm not privy to the specific information that Mr. Koskinen sees, I say that he is equally constrained by not having my 18 years as a programmer and 10 years as a software re-engineering tools salesman. I know how bad things are in the engine room. My guess is that Mr. Koskinen receives a seriously sanitized version of eighth-hand information.

The story of the executed sailor pretty much sums up what happens to whistleblowers and smart-alecs who try to warn about a coming crash. Small wonder many people are just ducking their heads and quietly preparing on their own.

I grew tired of saying in December and January (but some will remember) that the compliancy percentage game is ludicruous ON THE FACE OF IT. Eddy is exactly right, not partially right, exactly right about software metrics as they really are ("aren't" would be a better way of putting it).

"Hey, Joe, how done are we with that thar Y2K thang?"

"Oh, 55% or so, I reckon."

"How do you know?"

"I don't but I gotta say something to the PR guys" (they both laugh ...)
