PC cd-rom cannot read vcd .dat file?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi,

I just got some vcd from China. I tried to play them on PCs (both window 95 P200 and window NT PII400) with different softwares (Mediaplayer, Xingmpeg, realplay with NO success.

I finally tried to just copy the .dat file from CD to my hard disk and found out that my NT cannot even copy it. I got a meessage "Invalide MS-DOS function" when I drag the icon from the CD folder into the hard disk folder. I can copy the .vcd file from the same CD with no problem. I will try my W95 later.

What's the trick?

Thanks in advance.

Answers

download ISOBuster and extract the .dat file into the hard disk , see if mediaplayer now plays it , it worked in many cases ...

Sounds like you have an XCD..... I suggest using either Zoomplayer or Media Player Classic to play the movie itself. Both can probably be found at doom9.org among other places. For those unfamilliar with XCD's, they cannot be played on any DVD player. You will need to download the XCD DirectShow filter(link included). An installed XVID codec is also required.
