I wish I knew as I have known a few 'desolate streams' - that have passed me by; and a poet told me when I was young and more foolish, "learn to lose, learn to lose."

It may have been Chehkov, but I'm not sure, perhaps "The Kiss"

'We are the music-makers' etc. is by the Irish poet Arthur O'Shaughnessy (1844-1881). It is the first verse of his 'Ode'. You can find the whole poem in a number of older anthologies such as A Golden Treasury of Irish Verse,Ed.Lennox Robinson,Macmillan and Co.Ltd. London, 1925.
