Resolution of "Standard" 35mm film and print materials

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Does anyone have experience testing the resolution of 35mm film and print materials, in order to get a realistic comparison with film scanner tests?

With high-quality digital print output ranging from 267-400ppi, and with afordable film scanners ranging from 2700-4000ppi, I'm curious as to any test results comparing conventional film/enlarger/print systems to a film/scanner/digital printer system. This way, a more realistic answer to the "how much resolution is enough" question could be obtained....

Hmmmm....I'm not sure of the purpose of your question so not sure how to reply. The limiting feature on the digital side the printer and not the scanner. The final print made in a darkroom will still be better than that made digitally because of the printer, not the scanner. The scanners are amazingly good! Actually, the printers are catching up but not quite there yet. For 35 mm, I think the 4,000 is overkill. Regards, Howard

2700 ppi scanners probably max out to the point of scanning the film grain but a 4000 ppi will probably give you the ability to crop a picture and still get a good print at 8X10.
