My daughter is trying to find out who invented the refrigerator car for trains. We think it was in 1868. An web or off line citation would be great.

You should definitely check out John H. White's 1986 book- The Great Yellow Fleet (ISBN No. 0-87095-091-6). Chapter 2 discusses the development of the concept of refrigerated rail cars in the 1840s, the limited implementation of the concept in the 1850s, and the spread of the refrigerated industry in the 1860s-1890s. Good luck with your research. Buddy Hill (no emails please)
