DSC-D700 or not?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I'm in a quandry, I am ready to buy my next digital. The choice is between a Olympus 620L and a DSC-D700. I have "borrowed" 620L from the local computer store a couple of times and absolutely love the crisp, clear, vivid pictures it produces. But, it doesn't have hardly any manual controls. I am used to having manual controls, especially shutter speed. My previous camera was a DC-120, it allowed manual shutter speed control, but its images were not as crisp as I would have liked.

Has anyone have a opinion on my in descision?

Has anyone been using a DSC-D700? I really would like to go with this camera, but I've heard about some focus problems and am wondering how bad they really are and does all its other functions outweigh this.

Thanks, Greg

they'll have the oly 2000 review done here in a week, check that out, lot more manual control you are after than the oly 620. D700 owners sound pretty happy, plenty of manual control there. You might also look at canon p-70 & nikon 950.

If you have narrowed down your choices to Oly 620 & Sony D700, your choice is Sony D700. I do have one and I really like it. However if you want to wait for Oly 2000, it seems to be a bargain for it's price tag. I also have the Canon Pro 70, and I do recommend that one too. But I can not recommend Nikon Coolpix series (I had the 900), it is not really in the same category as these other digicams. Between the Sony & Canon, of course Sony has more manual functions than Canon, but you can not go wrong with neither. I think Oly 2000 is going to strike gold with it's price tag (around $850 US). Good luck to you.

I am also looking at the D700. It seems to have all the controls I want. I have used an Olympus 600, and what bugs me is that it will take the shutter speed down to 1/30 and NOT tell you. When zoomed out, hand held, this is asking for blur!
