Smart media vs. Compact flash cards

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have been reading and learning a great deal in here. I am interested in the Oly 2000 and the Nikon 950.. Had just about decided on the Oly but have a question about which media card is likely to become the industry standard.. and if the other will become obsolete in a short time. Thanks

I don't think smartmedia will go obsolete very soon. The problem isn't obsolescence, it is that smartmedia holds less than compact flash, so if you want big storage it sucks. For instance, the oly 2000 can probably only store 5 or 6 uncompressed photos on a 32MB card. The other problem is that the controller isn't built into it like in compact flash, so when they come out with bigger smartmedia cards there often are compatability problems with old cameras. I'm probably going to get the oly 2000 anyway.
