---Yesterday Axent stock was down to $9.37 1/2, a 71 percent loss in just five trading days.

Axent blamed its reversal of fortune on the year 2000 computer bug, saying its corporate customers are spending so much money getting their systems ready to deal with the Y2K problem that they've cut back on other computer expenditures.

Analysts who follow the information technology industry have been warning about that diversion of resources for months. They say it could get worse as the end of the year nears and companies are forced to throw money at computer systems that can't recognize the year 2000.

I'm sure a lot of tech companies will blame their sickness/death on y2k expenses. How many of these outfits would have sickened or died anyway is going to be impossible to say. Most tech companies have always been like mushrooms in normal times -- they appear, grow fast, and die quickly.
