Denver: $1M in welfare mistake

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I don't know if this has already been posted here.....if it has, I'm sorry for the duplication.

The state welfare agency issued almost $1 million in March food stamp benefits to unqualified residents.

It's the first time anything like this has happened, but the problem has been corrected, Department of Human Services spokesman Dwight Eisnach said Friday.

The department will now ask as many as 5,800 low-income people to repay the state.

"We realize these are low-income families," Eisnach said. "It may be difficult."

The error occurred in late February as the state agency was updating its databases and preparing computers for Y2K, Eisnach said.

A duplicate data field gave an average of $160 in benefits to those who had qualified for the program in February but did not qualify in March, Eisnach said. With up to 5,800 people affected, the total comes to $928,000.

Hi, Do you have a link? They had a story a few weeks ago about New Jersey and a similar problem.

Thanks Sheila - Denver did say they were planning a fix on failure strategy some ways back :) (to much adverse crticism...)

Thanks sysman,

Shelia, sorry it was late last night and I had just driven 6 hours from Ohio. Didn't see the address at bottom. Was just skimming for "blue" :>

Just a minor problem, isn't it?

Just one more "bump in the road" ...../^\......, or are we the Preppies (preparing individuals) making a mountain out of a molehill, or is the administration trying to get people to pretend that there are only isolated molehills, while ignoring the whole long slope up the mountain?
